What is amniotic septum syndrome?

Amniotic septum syndrome or amniotic fluid is a rare condition where the amniotic sac separates and becomes attached to the limbs or other parts of the fetus . This spasm can cause a variety of problems depending on where the fibers are and how tightly they are wound. The amniotic fiber strip is one of the rare causes of fetal malformations .

The fetus is growing floating in amniotic fluid in the mother's womb. The amniotic sac is a coating that holds fluid around the fetus and in the uterus. What are the results for a fetus with amniotic septum syndrome?

How serious is amniotic fluid syndrome?

Each case is unique, multiple fibers can become entangled around the fetus, and the severity can range from mild to life-threatening depending on where the bands are restricted and their degree of adhesion.

If there is evidence of amniotic fluid strips, a detailed ultrasound test should be performed to assess the severity and avoid misdiagnosis.

Amniotic bands can be difficult to detect with ultrasound because of their small size, so it is important to consider this case by someone knowledgeable about amniotic syndrome.

Individual fibers are often difficult to see on an ultrasound, and usually, this condition is detected indirectly by contractions and swelling to the limbs and other parts of the fetal body.

What will happen after birth?

A fetus with amniocentesis may need treatment after birth. Occasionally reconstructive surgery may be needed to correct deep constriction grooves, fused fingers or toes, cleft lip or clubfoot. Your child's surgical needs will range from small to complex depending on the degree of distortion caused by the amniotic fluid bands.

In most situations, you should be able to discuss your options with the plastic surgeon soon after giving birth.

Can this situation be overcome?

Currently, there is no way to prevent the amniotic septum phenomenon, but mothers can perform periodic pregnancy check-ups to detect abnormalities through ultrasound imaging early. The results of the intensive tests will screen for the risk of amniotic bands causing birth defects or not.

In some special cases, direct interventions by opening the mother's uterus and cutting amniotic fibers entangled the fetus body and continue to place the baby in the womb for the baby to develop until birth. This is the optimal way to deal with severe cases of pregnancy with amniocentesis.
