Today, this 34-year-old woman wants to thank all those who have donated blood and urge everyone to participate in National Blood Donor Week.
“It's awful, I don't know how to thank the humanitarian blood donation service enough,” the mother told AUSTRALIAN ASSOCIATED PRESS.
"I have 7 minutes to live"
Although Parkes knew this pregnancy was a high risk, she never imagined that her placenta would stick to her bladder and nearly lose her life.
Because she had had a caesarean before, the placenta stuck to the scar tissue on the uterus and spread "like a tumor".
Ultrasound could not detect whether it was dangerous or not so she was hospitalized to give birth as early as 34 weeks pregnant .
"When the doctors started surgery, they touched the aorta and I started bleeding until it was exhausted," she said.
“My placenta doesn't stop pushing the blood out, but the doctors can't stitch it up because they need to take it out first.
I only have 7 minutes to live. I wouldn't have survived without the vascular surgeon by my side.
"Did you wake up today?"
Although her son Billy, now 2 years old, it took a long time for Parkes to talk about his terrifying experience in hopes of encouraging the public to participate in blood donation.
“My two poor daughters had to wait outside the hospital for a week, and they asked the same question every day, 'Are you waking up today?' "
“I have to help everyone. I want people to look at me and think about humanitarian blood donation, ”she told AAP.
“The pregnant mums out there also choose a caesarean without realizing it has many risks. I don't want this to happen to anyone else. ”
We need more volunteers
"Our wonderful volunteers can't do it alone, we need more people to donate blood on a regular basis, as a life-saving habit."
1 out of 3 Australians will need blood donation but only 1 in 30 are currently donating blood, she said.
