Instructions for designing vector graphics in Sketch
Sketch is a vector-based graphics software , so users can create and edit shapes by manipulating their points and paths. In the article How to draw shapes in Sketch , we have mentioned vectors but in this section, let's learn more about the feature of editing vector images in Sketch.
To access vector editing mode, select a shape layer and double click (or press Enter) and select Insert > Vector from the toolbar pop-up menu, we will start drawing a new shape.
Match the picture
With 2 or 3 paths selected, go to Layer > Path > Join to combine them into a continuous path. The bottom path in the selection stays the same, while the upper path layers move to match.
Convert to shape (outline)
In addition to converting the text layer into a shape to edit points, you can also convert the layer border to a shape with the same steps. Choose Layer > Convert to Outlines from the menu (or press Shift + Command + O ), the borders on the selected layer will turn into independent paths.
Offset path
Users can expand or collapse the shape of the selected shape by going to Layer > Path > Offset from the main menu. Once selected, we will adjust the slider to see how the shape shows up as a compensation. Similar to the shape when its inner or outer borders are an independent path. Note, this is the one-time operation, copy the layer to backup before doing. The path compensation feature is only available in Sketch 50.2 and above.
Reverse order
The direction of the path is determined in the order in which the points are set, which means that there will be 1 start and end point which are all open paths. Choose Layer > Path > Reserve Order to swap the start and end points, this allows you to place the next point from the opposite position or move the position of the arrow on the border.
Vector tools
Instead of starting with a specific shape, you can draw a new shape using the vector tool in Sketch. Choose Invert > Vector from the toolbar pop-up menu, then click anywhere on the canvas to add a new point. Click on another location to add the next point.
You will see a link between the two points. When adding the third point, click and drag to draw a curve. If clicking on the first point again, the link is closed.
Types of points
As is known, a shape is made up of many points. There are different types of points with different effects on the path that connects them. There are four basic types of points in the Inspector: Straight, Mirrored, Disconnected and Asymmetric.
Shortcuts
While drawing or editing vector shapes, users can easily change the type of shapes with keyboard shortcuts. After selecting a score, press 1 of the following keys:
1 - Straight
2 - Mirrored
3 - Disconnected
4 - Asymmetric
Points and paths
All shapes are created by vector points and connected by paths, thereby creating the shape of the shape. The vector editing feature in Sketch supports creating new shapes while editing and refining the vector layer.
To complete this process, you must go through the steps such as selecting points, moving points, aligning points, rounded, editing paths, closing or opening paths.
Above is a basic guide on how to edit vector graphics in Sketch. With an intuitive interface and easy to understand operation, it is not difficult for you to handle shapes in this user-friendly graphic software!
