My fiber optic connection was finally activated and I was able to start installing and setting up the router and all the devices connected to it.

I previously had a DSL hybrid connection from Telekom, with a possible speed of 16,000 kbit/s DSL and an additional 50,000 kbit/s with LTE when downloading. When there was a free offer for a fiber optic connection, after all it saves you around €750 connection costs, I decided to go for it and selected a 600,000 kbit/s connection.

In the first year, this results in costs of €24.99 per month, from the second year €79.99. The router also costs another €5 per month.

With my old DSL connection, the costs were €39.95 plus another €5 for the router.

With a connection with 400,000 kbit/s fiber optics, you end up paying (only) around €10 more than with a DSL/hybrid with a maximum theoretical speed of up to 66,000 kbit/s, which I never reached.

You could choose the router for the new fiber optic connection from a variety of devices, depending on your requirements. I chose the Fritz!Box 7590, which is currently the latest model.

Thanks to the good description, the connection was made quickly and easily. Only an Ethernet LAN cable had to be connected from the router to the NT (Network Terminator) of the optical fiber, and an Ethernet LAN cable from the PC to the router and the power cable.

Since all the connection data was already preconfigured, all I had to do was start the PC and the Internet connection was established automatically.

For all devices that were connected via WLAN, I then had to search for the new WLAN radio network (SSID) for each device, enter the specified password for it, and these devices also worked.

The complete connection took around 15 minutes.

But then I later changed the name of the wireless network (SSID) and the password for it.

I used Hello Neighbors as a name and one that I can remember well as a password.

After everything was connected, I naturally wanted to know how fast my new fiber optic connection is.

There are many test sites for this on the internet, I tested it on this site:

And this is the result:

I did the test with my laptop connected to a LAN cable.

I was very pleased and also a bit surprised because the guaranteed speed was even exceeded.

But even a test via WLAN was no worse on my laptop.

The upload was even a bit faster.

However, another test with my smartphone and tablet resulted in significantly lower speeds of around 50,000 kbit/s. I suspect this may be due to the older hardware of both devices, or it is used to optimize battery life.

However, I didn't bother to check whether I could possibly change or switch something in their software. For me, the speed of these devices is completely sufficient.

However, it is not the case that you get this high speed with every download. This depends, among other things, on the server on the opposite side, or on the time of day, etc.

The hardware used must also be taken into account. In the past, this was usually faster than a download, today it is sometimes the other way around.

My opinion:
If you are given a free offer to switch to a fiber optic connection, you should really think about it more carefully, because you save the otherwise high costs of doing so. Which speed you then select depends, among other things, on whether you make a lot of larger downloads/uploads, or how much money you want or can spend on it each month.

Those who have their own property, even if they do not use it themselves, should definitely opt for a fiber optic connection, because this is the future and thus also increases the value of it.
