The reporters had an interview with Dr. Powell on the issue of flying during the corona flu epidemic. Iata represents approximately 290 airlines and more than 80% of global airline traffic. Stay tuned for the following article to know how to avoid corona virus infection on planes.
Dr. David Powell - Iata's Medical Advisor said latex masks and gloves were not very effective in flying during the corona flu
According to SINGAPORE (BLOOMBERG) - Forget about latex masks and gloves, the best way to avoid corona virus is to wash your hands regularly, according to a medical consultant with the world's airlines.
Dr. David Powell, a doctor and medical advisor to the International Air Transport Association (Iata), said the virus could not last long on a chair or armrest. Masks and gloves do a better job of spreading bugs than stopping them, he says.
As concerns increase about the size of the service, airlines from United Airlines to Cathay Pacific have eliminated thousands of flights to China.
Dr. David Powell said the comment revolved around the issue of flying during the corona flu
Is there a risk of getting a virus on a plane?
The risk of getting a serious virus infection onboard is low. The ambience of a modern aircraft is very different from a movie theater or an office building. Air is a combination of fresh air and recirculating air, about half of each air. And the circulating air passes through the same filters that we use in operating operating rooms. That supplied air is guaranteed to be 99.97% (or better) free of viruses and other particles. So the risk, if any, does not come from the air provided. It comes from other people.
Risk of infection by touching seats, handrails or any object on the aircraft
Viruses and other bacteria like to live on living surfaces like we do. Just shaking hands with someone carries a much greater risk than a dry surface with no biological material on it. The survival of the virus on the surfaces is not great, so it is believed that normal cleaning, and then further cleaning in the event that someone is found to be contagious, is the proper procedure.
Will people stop together in an airplane? I will answer by asking: Will I stop going to the movies, or sports games, or concerts or conferences? I do not think so.
What's important if you're on an airplane to make sure you're not infected?
Hand hygiene: contrary to popular belief, hands are the way these viruses spread most effectively. Topping the list is frequent hand washing, hand hygiene or both. Avoid touching your face. If you cough or sneeze, it is important to cover your face with your sleeve. Better yet, clean your hands afterwards. Washing your hands and drying them is the best procedure. When that's not easy, alcohol disinfectant is the best thing.
Will wearing a mask and gloves help prevent infection?
First of all, masks: There's very little evidence of benefit, if any, in a random situation. The mask is very helpful for those who are not well to protect others from them. But wearing a mask all the time won't work. It will allow the virus to spread around it, through it and worse yet, if it becomes wet, it will encourage the growth of viruses and bacteria.
Gloves are probably even worse because people wear gloves and then touch everything they will touch with their hands. So it just becomes another way of microbial transfer. And inside the gloves, your hands are hot and sweaty, which is a really good environment for bacteria to grow.
Is closure the answer to stopping the spread of the virus?
One thing that has changed in the world is the likelihood of infections moving quickly from one location to another and the fact that aviation is a part of it. At the same time, aviation is essential to deal with epidemics like this. And this is why our partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) and Iata has been on for several years.
If countries just shut down during an outbreak, as happened in West Africa with Ebola, that could make things much worse. During that outbreak, the country struggled, WHO couldn't bring their people in, they couldn't take out biological samples. The economic impact of being turned off makes things worse. Travel bans in general can make things worse. It can encourage people to travel in secret, which means you lose control of it.
When can we say that the worst can end?
The number of cases has continued to grow around 16% to 20% per day. Until we reach the point where those numbers are decreasing, we can't say we've turned the angle.
