Install and use Family Safety on Windows 10

In modern society, digital devices become common in families. Children approach computers, tablets or smartphones from a very early age. Along with that are risks and dangers for children when using digital devices. The Microsoft site  introduces the  Family Safety feature on Windows 10  and Xbox. The feature helps parents better manage the use of digital devices and stay safe online.

Under the influence of the Corona pandemic, children are staying at home more than going to school. That means more time children use digital devices. How to manage time, digital content children watch? Let's find out together.

What is Family Safety?

Family Safety is a feature developed by Microsoft from Windows 7, with the name  Parental Controls.  Meaning  Family Safety  will help parents manage the use of digital devices, monitor the content their children watch online. Help your children stay healthy both mentally and physically.

With Family Safety, parents can manage:

• Family Safety will allow you to block an account.
• Collect and receive reports of your child's device and online activity.
• Block and view the websites your child visits on the computer.
• Review the apps and games your child can access.
• Manage when your child uses the device.
• Determine your child's location

Family Safety installation guide

Install Family Safety on Windows 10 version 1809 or earlier.

To start setting up Family Safety, go to the  Start button > Settings  > Accounts . Or use the keyboard shortcut  Windows Key + I  to access Settings and select Accounts.

Next select  Family & other users . There are two options,  Your family  and  Other users. Since we are setting for  Family Safety , choose  Add a family member.

Continue to select the checkbox:  Add a child , enter your child's email address.

Note:  If your children don't already have  a Microsoft Account , you'll need to create one for them. Click the link:  The person I want to add doesn't have an email address , follow the instructions to create an account.

An invitation will then be sent to the child's email address just created. The Accounts window will show pending users. You can close the wizard.

When the Invitation email arrives, you or your child need to select  Sign in and Join .

Install Family Options on Windows version 1909 and later

Microsoft has made a change to Family Safety on Windows 10. This feature has been migrated and belongs  to the Windows Security Center  –  Windows Security Center.  You access the path: Search button > Enter Windows Security > Access Security Center.

The bottom left section will be  Family Options . With Family Options, Microsoft makes clear what settings can help you protect your children in the digital world.

Manage accounts on Family Safety.

On old Windows 10, after completing the settings, you can proceed to account management. To get started, follow the link: click the  Start button > Settings > Accounts > Family  and other users. Click the  Manage family settings online link.

On the new Windows 10, you go directly to  family.microsoft.com . Sign in with your Microsoft account. Next is to add your child's account.

Manage your child's activities

You can manage your child's activities on digital devices:

• Manage the apps and games your kids play.
• Manage the websites your child visits.
• Manage the searches you make whether on your computer or online.
• Manage the time your children use the device.

Manage your child's screen time

Using Family Safety Parents can manage and set screen time for their children. Fully proactive and remote. Build healthy device usage habits.

Limit apps and games

Spending too much time watching videos or playing games? Set limits on your kids' apps and games to help them stay focused and healthy during the day.

Parents can now manage on Windows computers, Xbox consoles and even Android phones.

Restrictions on what children watch online

This is probably the most difficult and concerning issue for parents. On the Internet there is a lot of good and bad content on the Internet. Children viewing content that is not appropriate for their age will adversely affect their physical and mental development.

With Family Safety, parents can specifically restrict the apps their children can use:

Manage spending on apps

If you have funds to your account to buy digital content directly from the Store, you don't want your kids to randomly buy apps or games. Using Family Safety, you can set what your children can buy and get your consent.

Determine your child's location

Maybe you don't need to invest in a million dollar smartwatch just to know where your child is. Using Family Safety with the Microsoft Launcher app , you'll be able to locate your child.
