When using Windows 10, there may be times when you want to take a screenshot of all or part of the desktop. You often need the screenshots to refine documentation, Word files or presentations. Here you will find the best and free variants in practice.
The standard Windows & print function
The shortcuts Windows and Print Screen instantly capture a screenshot of the entire desktop. The photo is immediately saved in the standard "Screenshots" folder of Windows. The screenshots are therefore located under This PC or My Computer / Pictures / Screenshots.
You also have the option not to save the screenshots in Windows. This makes it possible to process recordings without saving them. To do this, just press the Print key. Then use the paste function by clicking the right mouse button or CTRL + V to paste the screenshot in your desired location.

The Windows "Snipping Tool"
In addition to the paste and print function, Windows 10 primarily provides us with the snipping tool as a screenshot tool. To start Snipping Tool, please press the Windows key or enter "Snipping Tool" in the search function . Launching the Snipping Tool will bring up a small line where you can edit the mode, delay and options.
The Snipping Tool mode can be divided into four categories:
- Free cutting
- Rectangular cutting
- Cut window
- Full Screen Crop
Once you have selected your desired mode, you can easily start taking screenshots by left-clicking on "New". The type of recording depends on the mode. With "Free cutting" the cutting is represented by scissors. By clicking the left mouse button, a red thread runs through your desktop, as soon as you release the button your screenshot will be completed.

With the "Rectangular cut" mode , your selection is automatically supplemented with the appropriate width and height, so your screenshot is always rectangular. It's even easier with the "Cut window" mode : Here, the selected window is marked by a - standard - red line, so you can easily see which window is selected. The last mode works in the same way as the first variant shown by us.
You've successfully taken a screenshot, now what?
The screenshots from the Snipping Tool can be edited very quickly. You can copy the screenshot with CTRL+C or by clicking the left mouse button and paste it in the corresponding document, file or presentation.
