How to open HEIC files on Windows
By default, Apple's iPhones and iPads take photos in the HEIF format, and these photos end up with the .HEIC extension. Windows 10 and 11 don't support HEIC files, but there is a way to view them or convert them to standard JPEG file formats.
The HEIC format was adopted by Apple in 2017 as a replacement for the JPEG format. More efficient in terms of size and quality, the HEIC file extension is also known as a HEIF file.
HEIC is better than JPG in many ways—namely, its ability to compress images into a smaller file size without losing quality. However, the key thing that keeps HEIC from becoming as popular as JPG is that not all apps and devices support HEIC. While more and more developers are adopting HEIC, it still isn’t as popular as the standard JPG format.
It has been used in the past for Portrait Mode on Apple iPhones, which gives much higher quality images than the regular JPEG format and offers a number of other advantages. It’s a new step for the world of image file extensions and a great way to cut down on file sizes . However, it’s hard to know what to do with them on Windows.
A few basic steps are all you need to do to be able to open such files on Windows 7, 8, and 10.
Tip : If you send an image file from your iOS device, such as via email or Dropbox, your iOS device will automatically convert the file to JPG, meaning you don't have to worry about HEIC/HEIF compatibility issues.

How to open HEIC files on Windows 10
While trying to open a HEIC file on Windows 10 for the first time can be a little frustrating, don’t worry. There’s a really simple fix that will have you opening your images in no time.
You might expect support to be included in Windows 10 in the future, but it isn't yet, and that means you'll need a few extensions to help.
To open HEIC files on Windows 10, you need the support of extensions
1. Download HEIF and HEVC extensions for Windows 10
The extensions you need to download are called HEIF Image Extensions and HEVC Video Extensions . Install both from the Store and you’re good to go. The HEIF extension is free, but the HEVC extension costs $0.99.
The Windows 10 extensions you need are available for download through the Microsoft Store. To open HEIC files, you'll need two extensions, one for HEIF and one for HEVC. Without both, you won't be able to open HEIC files on your PC.

3. Save a copy as JPEG
While you can now open your HEIC files on Windows 10, you may still run into compatibility issues with other apps and services. If you want to use any image files, you should save a copy as a JPEG.
To do this in the Photos app, first tap the Edit & Create button in the top-right corner and select Edit . Now tap the Save a copy button in the bottom-left corner.
When the standard Windows 10 save dialog appears, JPG should be selected by default, but if not, select it from the drop-down box. Then click Save and you’ll have an exact copy of your image, now as a JPEG rather than a HEIC file.

If you open your HEIC file and see a message saying you’re missing the “HEVC video extension,” then you have an HEIC that includes HEVC video. This is usually because you used the iPhone’s Live feature, which records a small, high-quality video alongside the photo so you have more control over what you’ve captured.
To convert these image file types, you’ll need a special plugin provided by Microsoft. Clicking the link below the warning message will open the Microsoft Store page for a HEVC plugin for $0.99.
