How to use the Data feature in Sketch
Sketch is a great graphic design software that you should try once in your life. Join us to learn how to handle data in Sketch like!
When working on models or prototypes, you may want to insert images and content into your designs to visualize the final product. With the Data feature of Sketch , you can quickly add text and actual image data to your designs and update them instantly.
Sketch allows you to insert two types of data: images and text. Image data sources are "packaged" inside Sketch, offering a diverse selection of user avatar images, templates or images directly from Unsplash. The application also includes two textual data sources - names and cities around the world.
In addition, you can add photos, self-created content, even plugins to put actual data into the design.
You can add image data to a selected shape layer or text data and any desired text layer. To do this, make sure you have a layer to add data to. Then choose the source from the Data toolbar icon or from Layer ›Data in the menu.
You will see Sketch insert a new image and a random image on the shape layer or update the text content with a random value on the text layer.
If you don't like what you've chosen or want to experiment with more data, from the Data menu select " Refresh Data " or press Command-Shift-D .
If you want to remove the connection to a data source on a layer, you can delete that connection by selecting " Clear Data " from the Data menu . This will move this connection but will not restore content on the original layer.
Symbols
You can also add text and image data to Symbols, allowing you to refresh multiple data sources at once when you have selected a version. Use Command-Shift-D to easily create reusable UI elements. Those elements contain content that is updated with a shortcut.
The data layer in the Symbols will appear on the overwritten panel at the Inspector with a small purple Data icon next to them.
You can refresh each Data layer in a Symbol by clicking the Data icon next to the Layer name in the override panel and selecting " Refresh Data ", or you can choose a new data source.
Add new data
You can add your own data by creating a .txt document or image folder you want to use and adding it as a data source in the Data table at Preferences. Go to that page if you want additional tips and best practices.
Data plugin
In addition to adding text files and image folders to insert data into Sketch, the data plugins offer even more features.
The Unsplash plugin in Sketch is a good example. You can add beautiful photos from Unsplash's rich, free, royalty-free photo library, right inside the document. You can also add keywords to create more specific photos.
