Microsoft Employee Buyout: What to Check Before You Accept

Microsoft announced a time-limited Voluntary Exit Offer (VEO) on October 26, 2026. The company says eligible employees in participating teams in the United Kingdom, Canada, India, and the United States at internal level 70 or below may leave with financial support and career-planning resources. Participation varies by organization. The public announcement does not give each employee’s payment, acceptance deadline, or complete conditions. Start with the personal offer link sent through Microsoft’s official channels, then review the written terms before deciding. Read Microsoft’s announcement.

First, understand what “buyout” means

In this context, “buyout” usually means an employer-funded voluntary exit package. It does not mean employees are buying Microsoft or receiving ownership shares. It also does not automatically mean every Microsoft employee is eligible, that a particular role is being eliminated, or that the same package is available in every country or team.

Microsoft has confirmed the broad scope and voluntary nature of its offer. Your invitation and offer document determine whether you qualify and what you would receive. If you did not receive an invitation, verify with HR through the company directory or official employee portal rather than relying on forwarded messages or social media posts.

What to check in a Microsoft employee buyout offer

1. Eligibility, dates, and the decision process

Check the employing legal entity, work location, job level, participating organization, and any conditions tied to your employment status. Ask for the application deadline, the date you must accept, when acceptance becomes binding, whether approval is required, and whether you can withdraw after applying. Also ask what happens if you decline. Do not assume that an offer to volunteer is a notice of redundancy or a promise of future job security.

2. The full payment, item by item

Request a written breakdown showing each payment and its calculation. Separate any enhanced exit amount from statutory redundancy pay, notice pay, accrued vacation pay, unpaid wages, bonus or commission, and other contractual amounts. Confirm whether you will work your notice, remain on payroll during garden leave, or receive payment in lieu of notice (PILON). Ask whether pension contributions, benefits, or allowances continue during notice.

If the exit is treated as redundancy, compare the statutory amount with the employer’s offer. In Great Britain, statutory redundancy pay normally requires at least two years of service and is calculated using age, completed service years, and capped weekly pay. Use the GOV.UK redundancy pay calculator as a check, not as a substitute for the employer’s written calculation. Northern Ireland has separate employment guidance, so confirm the rules that apply to your location.

3. Shares, bonus, pension, and benefits

Ask what happens to unvested stock awards, restricted stock units, employee share-purchase contributions, and any performance-based compensation. The answer can depend on the plan documents, award type, vesting date, and the reason employment ends; do not treat an estimated share value as guaranteed cash. Request a written statement from the appropriate HR or stock-plan contact.

Confirm the last date of pension contributions, health and life coverage, paid leave, employee discounts, and any other benefits. Ask whether there is a continuation option, its cost, and the deadline to elect it. The useful comparison is the value you actually keep after departure, not just the headline payment.

4. Tax treatment and take-home value

Ask payroll to label the elements of the payment and provide an estimated net amount. UK tax treatment differs by component: wages, holiday pay, bonuses, and notice pay are generally taxable, while qualifying redundancy or severance amounts may receive different treatment. The first combined £30,000 of qualifying termination awards is usually not subject to income tax, but this is not a blanket tax-free allowance for every item in an exit package. HMRC explains the categories and exceptions in its termination payment tax guidance.

Use the written breakdown to compare estimated take-home pay with your monthly expenses, debt payments, and likely time to find another role. If your circumstances are complex, get independent tax advice before relying on a payroll estimate.

5. The agreement and what you give up

Read any settlement agreement, release, confidentiality clause, reference, restrictive covenant, intellectual-property term, and rehire condition. A settlement agreement can waive specified employment claims. Under Acas guidance, a valid agreement must be written, identify the claims it covers, and include advice from a relevant independent adviser. The employer may contribute to that advice, but is not required to do so. Acas recommends allowing at least 10 days to consider formal terms; the appropriate time can depend on the circumstances. Review Acas’s settlement agreement guidance and ask for more time if you need it.

Check whether accepting affects an open grievance, bonus dispute, immigration sponsorship, or a transfer to another Microsoft role. Do not sign because a payment is described as “standard” or “take it or leave it”; ask an independent employment adviser to explain the effect of the exact document.

A practical decision test

Before accepting, put two written scenarios side by side: staying in your current role and leaving on the proposed terms. Compare guaranteed net cash, notice and benefit end dates, pension impact, unvested compensation, job-search time, and obligations after departure. Ask HR to clarify any term that is missing or ambiguous, and keep the response with your copy of the offer.

  • Is my role and employing entity expressly eligible?
  • What is the gross and estimated net value of every payment?
  • How are notice, unused leave, bonus, shares, pension, and benefits handled?
  • What claims or rights would I waive, and who pays for independent advice?
  • What are the exact application and acceptance deadlines, and can I withdraw?
  • What happens if I decline or if the company does not approve my application?

As of October 27, 2026, Microsoft’s public announcement confirms a UK-inclusive offer but does not publish the individual package amounts or all UK-specific conditions. Treat your personal written offer, applicable plan documents, and independent advice as the basis for a decision.
