What to Do If a Passenger Becomes Disruptive on a Flight
If another passenger becomes disruptive midflight, learn how to alert the crew, stay safe, respond to threats, and report the incident afterward.
The quickest way to find an official Scotland weather warning on your phone is to check the Met Office app or its UK warnings page, then search for the town or area that matters. Turn on the app’s notifications and save both your home and destination. For flood-specific messages, register with SEPA Floodline. The UK Government’s Emergency Alerts service is separate and is reserved for emergencies that pose a danger to life.
Illustrative example only: Rowan is planning a drive from Glasgow to Fort William. This hypothetical trip is a guide to the steps, not a report of a real warning or test.
Open the Met Office UK weather warnings page or its official weather app. Search for a place, inspect the warning map, and open any warning covering it. A warning may cover a broad area, so check the listed locations and map rather than assuming that a warning for Scotland applies everywhere in the country.
Read the full notice, not just its color. Check the hazard, the affected places, when the warning starts and ends, the impacts considered possible, and the recommended action. Met Office warnings can be issued up to seven days ahead for hazards including wind, rain, snow, ice, fog, thunderstorms, lightning, and extreme heat. Forecasts and warnings can change, so revisit the notice before you travel.
The Met Office bases warning colors on both the likelihood and the potential impact of severe weather. A yellow warning is not a promise that conditions will be harmless, and the color alone does not tell you what to do. The Met Office warning guide explains how to interpret the notice and its impact details.
Focus or Do Not Disturb settings, a silent notification category, or battery restrictions can make an app alert less noticeable. If a push notification does not arrive, open the official app or website directly. You can also subscribe to Met Office email warning alerts for selected UK regions. Scotland’s choices include Highlands & Eilean Siar, Grampian, Strathclyde, Central, Tayside & Fife, Orkney & Shetland, and SW Scotland, Lothian Borders.
A rain warning and a flood warning answer different questions. SEPA operates Floodline in Scotland and sends free messages by phone or text to registered users when flooding is forecast for an area of interest. Register through SEPA Floodline and enter the relevant postcode or location. Depending on the area, SEPA may offer a targeted Flood Warning or a wider-area Flood Alert. Check the service available for the address; registering for an alert does not guarantee that every journey or road will be covered.
SEPA also publishes a Scottish Flood Forecast. If you need help registering, Floodline lists 0345 988 1188; choose option 2 for Scotland and option 3 to speak with an adviser. Rowan could check the forecast and sign up for relevant places before the trip rather than waiting for heavy rain.
Government Emergency Alerts are not routine weather-warning notifications. Authorities use them for a nearby emergency that threatens life, which can include severe flooding or extreme storms. Compatible phones on UK 4G and 5G networks can receive an alert without mobile data, Wi-Fi, an app download, or a sign-up. Alerts are based on the phone’s current location, not its owner’s home address.
An alert can make a loud siren-like sound and vibrate even if the phone is set to silent. Read and follow its instructions. If one arrives while you are driving, do not handle the phone: stop somewhere safe and legal first. See GOV.UK’s Emergency Alerts guidance for details. Keep checking Met Office warnings and local information as well; emergency alerts do not replace those channels.
Before Rowan leaves Glasgow, the Met Office warning check answers what weather may affect Glasgow and Fort William. For road disruption, Rowan should also open Traffic Scotland’s live traffic information on a phone. It covers incidents, closures, and warnings on Scotland’s trunk-road network. Check it again before departure and during a safe stop; it is not a substitute for checking local roads or the forecast.
For Rowan’s hypothetical trip, the practical routine is simple: check the warning map for both ends of the journey, read the specific advice, check SEPA if flooding is relevant, then review live road information. The same routine works for a commute, a ferry trip, or a day outdoors anywhere in Scotland.
