The A9 processor brings Apple and Samsung closer together
The Apple A8 processor with 20nm architecture inside the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus is manufactured by a Taiwanese company, but in order to get the A9 chip with 14nm process, forcing Apple to reconnect with Samsung.
Information about Apple's new generation of chips just leaked shows that it will be outsourced by Samsung - its biggest rival by 14nm process, Samsung's three-dimensional FinFet technology, which means the chipset will not as flat as conventional silicon chipsets. This makes the Apple A9 chip 35% more energy efficient, 20% faster, and 15% smaller than the 20nm chips like the A8 and Samsung Exynos 5 Octa 5433.
This was also confirmed by Kim Ki-nam, the head of Samsung's semiconductor business, and said the contract with Apple would help Samsung make more profits.
Currently, Apple is asking TSMC to mass produce A8 chips, but Samsung is also partly responsible for production. TSMC accounts for 70% of the total product, while Samsung is responsible for about 30%. That's because Apple is trying to separate its dependence from Samsung, but the Korean tech giant currently has a huge advantage over TSMC because it has a 14nm chip making process. Meanwhile, TSMC says it can only make 16nm chips for Apple next year.
The resumption of key manufacturing roles will help Samsung get more money from the American giant and most importantly, its role will increase a lot in the eyes of Apple.
