Windows 10 update limit bandwidth

With a background update of Windows, Microsoft uses the entire available Internet speed ( bandwidth ). But there is a way to limit this in the settings.

Limit update bandwidth

Normally, that's not too bad, unless you're watching a movie on Netflix or similar services, for example. Then it could be that the transmission stutters or no longer runs at all.

The bandwidth for the updates can be throttled or reduced in the Windows settings. To do this, go to the settings

Windows 10 update limit bandwidth

then down to Update and Security and click on the entry.

In the window that then opens, click on the entry Transmission Optimization on the left .

Windows 10 update limit bandwidth

Then scroll down a bit on the right side and click on the Advanced options entry .

The bandwidth can now be reduced here in the download settings for the Windows updates. By default, absolute bandwidth is enabled.

Windows 10 update limit bandwidth

First, activate the Percentage of measured bandwidth (measured at the update source) entry, and then tick Limit bandwidth when downloading updates in the background . The permitted bandwidth can now be set with the slider below.

As an example, I once allowed 33% bandwidth.

From now on and without restarting Windows, the changed value is applied and is active.

Now a Windows update in the background should no longer disturb the TV evening with Netflix or other providers.

If you want to change that again, it's enough to simply reactivate the Absolute bandwidth entry at the top.

Note:
The change only applies to the background updates . If you look for updates yourself and then want to download them, the entire available bandwidth becomes active again.
