Microsoft is adding a Gamepad keyboard to Windows 11
While constantly reminding Windows 10 users that support will soon end , Microsoft continues to advertise improvements for Windows 11. According to The Verge, Microsoft officially launched a new keyboard that allows you to type more easily with an Xbox controller on Windows 11. This keyboard will be available in the next Windows 11 update.
Note : Microsoft tested the first beta of this feature in September 2024.
Previously, Xbox controllers were notoriously difficult to use with Windows – despite being made by the same company. Now, an on-screen keyboard will be available, which is much more compatible with Xbox controllers, especially when typing in text fields.
Additionally, the gamepad keyboard will support useful controller shortcuts, or "accelerators," as the Windows Insider blog calls them. Furthermore, the blog notes that "the keys on the keyboard have been aligned vertically for better controller navigation patterns . "
How to use Windows 11 gamepad keyboard with Xbox controller
First, you can enable the gamepad keyboard in your Windows 11 settings. Once in the settings, simply select Keyboard layout > Gamepad.

This update is good news for gamers. For those who can’t upgrade to Windows 11, it’s frustrating that the company has left this new (but basic) feature as something reserved for the latest operating system.
