WJEC January 2027 GCSE Resit Dates: Papers, Eligibility, and Deadlines
WJEC’s final January 2027 timetable schedules legacy GCSE resit papers from January 6 through January 15. The key dates to note are English Literature Unit 1 on January 6, Mathematics–Numeracy Units 1 and 2 on January 7 and 13, Computer Science Units 1 and 2 on January 11 and 14, and English Literature Unit 2 on January 12. These are WJEC legacy GCSE qualifications marked “WALES” in the timetable, and the resit route is restricted to eligible candidates.

Which WJEC GCSE resit papers are scheduled?
The table below highlights the written papers most likely to matter to candidates checking English Literature, Mathematics–Numeracy, or Computer Science. WJEC’s full timetable also lists other legacy subjects, including Geography, Business, French, German, Welsh Literature, Food and Nutrition, and Religious Studies. These January dates fall in UK winter time: Greenwich Mean Time, or GMT (UTC+00:00). The standard published start for a morning examination is 9:00 a.m. UK time, which is 09:00 UTC on these dates. The timetable labels sessions as morning or afternoon; the start shown here is the JCQ published time. A center may begin a morning exam between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m., so candidates should use the time on their own statement of entry or center instructions.
Why is Mathematics–Numeracy in January?
The legacy GCSE Mathematics–Numeracy resit is not simply following the November Mathematics schedule. WJEC says it moved the November 2026 series for legacy Mathematics–Numeracy to January 2027 to make the busy November period more manageable for centers and examiners, when legacy GCSE Mathematics and the first units of new GCSEs were also scheduled. The two qualifications have separate entries and timetables. If your record says Mathematics rather than Mathematics–Numeracy, do not assume the January dates above apply; check the qualification code and series with your exams officer.
For Numeracy, both units are shown across Foundation, Intermediate, and Higher tiers. Unit 1 is on January 7 and Unit 2 is on January 13. The duration differs by tier, but all three tiers are on the same date for each unit in the final timetable. Use your entry confirmation to check your tier before planning travel or revision around a paper.
Who can take a January 2027 legacy resit?
This is a restricted resit opportunity, not a general January session for anyone who wants to repeat a GCSE. WJEC’s entry information says the January resits are available only to post-16 candidates who had previously cashed in the legacy qualification before January 2027. Availability is also subject to demand. The same eligibility rule is specified for the relevant legacy qualifications, including English Literature, Mathematics–Numeracy, and Computer Science.
Being post-16 by itself does not establish eligibility. If you are unsure whether your earlier entry included the required cash-in, ask the center that entered you to check your record and the specific qualification code. Do this before relying on a subject date, because a paper appearing in the timetable does not guarantee that every center will offer an entry for it.
Have the entry deadlines passed?
Yes. For the January 2027 GCSE series, the standard entry deadline was October 21, 2026. The listed amendment deadline is November 11, and late-entry fees apply from November 12. As of October 23, the normal entry date has passed, but the amendment date is still ahead.
An amendment deadline should not be treated as a fresh, fee-free entry period. If your name, subject, tier, unit, or option is missing or incorrect, contact your school or college exams officer right away and ask what change is still possible under WJEC’s rules. If you think you should have been entered but cannot see the exam on your confirmation, do not wait until November 11 to raise it. The center can check whether a permitted amendment is available and whether a fee applies.
What should candidates verify with their center?
Before the exam, confirm the exact qualification and paper code, the unit and option, the tier where relevant, and whether the center has confirmed your entry. Then check the examination room, arrival instructions, and actual start time. The official timetable’s “morning” label does not override center arrangements: JCQ permits morning papers to start between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. UK time while protecting the required exam conditions.
WJEC says important updates are issued as circulars in the Key Information area of its Portal, and exams officers receive email notifications. Candidates who need the latest instruction should ask their center’s exams officer to check those notices and pass on anything relevant. Keep the center’s own written confirmation with your revision calendar; it is the practical reference for your sitting.
