Amazon Earnings Explained: How to Read Q3 Results and Assess AMZN Stock

Amazon earnings tell investors more than whether the company made a profit. To understand what a quarterly report could mean for AMZN stock, read five things together: sales growth, operating margin, Amazon Web Services (AWS), free cash flow, and management's outlook. Then compare those figures with both the prior year and investors' expectations. A good quarter and a good stock return are not necessarily the same thing.

Amazon released results for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, on October 29, 2026. Its official third-quarter earnings release provides a useful example of how to analyze the report without relying on the stock's immediate price movement.

Amazon Q3 2026 earnings at a glance

MetricQ3 2026Q3 2025What to notice
Net sales$201.9 billion$180.2 billionUp 12% year over year
Operating income$28.1 billion$17.4 billionSubstantial growth in core operating profit
Operating margin13.9%About 9.7%More operating profit per sales dollar
AWS sales$46.0 billion$33.0 billionUp approximately 39% year over year
Diluted earnings per share (EPS)$1.89$1.95Declined despite stronger operating income

Read the period labels carefully: these are three-month results. Amazon separately reported trailing-12-month cash-flow figures, which must not be confused with cash generated during Q3 alone. Dollar amounts above are rounded from the company's release.

1. Start with revenue growth, but check the comparison

Revenue, called net sales in Amazon's statements, measures the value recognized from products and services. Q3 2026 sales rose from $180.2 billion to $201.9 billion. That signals expansion, but the reported percentage is not the whole story.

Amazon said changes in foreign exchange rates reduced reported sales by about $0.9 billion, and that moving Prime Day into Q2 in most large countries distorted the year-over-year Q3 comparison. The company estimated Q3 growth would have been approximately four percentage points higher without that event-timing shift. Treat this as management's estimate of a timing effect, not an alternative GAAP revenue figure.

Useful test: compare reported growth, currency-adjusted growth, and exceptional timing factors. If growth weakens even after adjusting for those factors, investigate demand and competition rather than assuming the calendar explains everything.

2. Look at operating income and margins before EPS

Operating income is sales minus operating expenses. Operating margin equals operating income divided by net sales. Using Amazon's Q3 numbers, about $28.1 billion divided by $201.9 billion gives a 13.9% operating margin. The comparable Q3 2025 margin was approximately 9.7%.

This is important because a business can increase revenue while earning less on each dollar sold. Here, the opposite occurred: Amazon expanded both revenue and operating profitability. For a more reliable trend, compare several quarters and examine whether improvements come from sustainable efficiencies or unusual gains and costs.

EPS deserves a separate check. Amazon's diluted EPS fell to $1.89 from $1.95, even while operating income rose. The company pointed primarily to a $9.5 billion pretax gain in Q3 2025 associated with its Anthropic investments, recorded outside operating income. This illustrates why a falling EPS figure does not automatically mean the underlying retail and cloud businesses deteriorated. Review the distinction between operating results and non-operating investment gains.

3. Break out AWS, retail, and advertising

Amazon reports three operating segments: North America, International, and AWS. Their economics differ substantially, so consolidated revenue alone can hide important changes.

  • AWS: Q3 sales were roughly $46.0 billion, up 39% year over year, with operating income of about $17.8 billion. Its operating margin was approximately 38.7%. AWS supplied about 63% of Amazon's consolidated operating income during the quarter, despite representing a much smaller share of sales.
  • North America: Sales were approximately $112.9 billion, up 6%, while operating income increased to about $8.7 billion. Look for whether logistics and delivery efficiencies continue to support margin improvements.
  • International: Sales were approximately $43.1 billion, up 5% as reported, and operating income was about $1.6 billion. Currency-adjusted growth was stronger, highlighting the importance of exchange rates.

Advertising is another important activity, but Amazon's reported advertising revenue should not be confused with a fourth operating segment. For Q3 2026, Amazon said advertising revenue grew 12% excluding currency effects, with timing factors affecting the comparison. Assess that business alongside marketplace services and subscriptions while avoiding double-counting revenue already included in consolidated sales.

4. Check cash flow and the cost of AI investment

Profit is not the same as cash remaining after investments. Amazon reported trailing-12-month operating cash flow of $168.3 billion, up 29% from $130.7 billion a year earlier. Yet its reported trailing-12-month free cash flow shifted to an outflow of $42.4 billion, compared with a $14.8 billion inflow in the preceding comparable period.

Amazon attributed much of this change to larger property and equipment purchases, primarily reflecting AI infrastructure investment. It also forecast approximately $220 billion in cash capital expenditures for full-year 2026. That is a company expectation, not a completed spending total.

What constitutes progress? Watch whether new data-center capacity supports higher AWS revenue, sustained margins, and eventually improved free cash flow. Elevated spending can be strategically rational, but the returns are uncertain and may take years. When cash outflows rise faster than the expected payoff, revisit assumptions about capacity utilization, competition, electricity costs, and depreciation.

5. Read guidance as carefully as reported results

Past-quarter numbers describe what happened; guidance describes what management currently expects. For Q4 2026, Amazon projected net sales of $240 billion to $247 billion and operating income of $28.5 billion to $33.5 billion. These ranges depend on assumptions that can change.

For AMZN stock, the relevant question is often whether guidance is above or below what investors had already priced in—not simply whether the outlook shows growth. Compare the midpoint and full range with credible estimates available before the release, and record the time those estimates were captured. Do not present an unverified consensus figure as fact.

Why can AMZN fall after strong earnings?

A stock price reflects expectations about future cash flows and risk. If investors expected even faster AWS growth, a stronger holiday-quarter outlook, or lower AI spending, a report with impressive absolute numbers could still disappoint. Conversely, improving margins or guidance can outweigh a weak headline EPS comparison.

Separate three questions: Did the business improve? Was the result better than expected? Does the current share price already reflect that improvement? Answering the first does not automatically answer the other two. Interest rates, broader market sentiment, and the valuation multiple investors assign to future earnings also affect AMZN.

A practical checklist for reading the next Amazon report

  1. Open Amazon's quarterly results archive and identify the period covered and release date.
  2. Write down revenue growth, operating income, operating margin, and diluted EPS; compare each with the same quarter last year.
  3. Check AWS sales growth and operating margin, followed by North America and International performance.
  4. Read the cash-flow reconciliation and note whether figures refer to one quarter, year to date, or the trailing 12 months.
  5. Compare management's next-quarter guidance with previous guidance and properly dated market expectations.
  6. Read the accompanying SEC filings for accounting policies, risks, segment details, and disclosures not captured in a short news release.
  7. Form a balanced conclusion: one encouraging sign, one material risk, and one metric to revisit next quarter.

Amazon scheduled its Q3 2026 results call for Thursday, October 29, at 2:00 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time (PDT, UTC−07:00), equivalent to 5:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT, UTC−04:00) and 21:00 UTC. The official call announcement explains where to find the webcast and materials. Check those materials for management's explanations rather than treating an initial market reaction as a definitive verdict.

Bottom line: the Q3 2026 report shows faster AWS growth and stronger operating profitability alongside substantial AI-related cash investment. Whether that combination makes AMZN attractive at a given price requires an independent valuation and a clear view of future cash returns.
