Black Doves season 2 is now streaming on Netflix, and its starting point is a dangerous one for Keira Knightley’s Helen Webb: she remains a spy inside a political family, her handler Reed has secrets of her own, and her closest friend Sam has sacrificed his chance at a quieter life. Netflix confirmed that the new season is now streaming.
If the Christmas-set first season is a blur, the essential mystery is this: Helen’s lover Jason was killed to cover up the accidental death of the Chinese ambassador. The answer brings closure to one investigation, but leaves Helen and Sam tied to the dangerous worlds they hoped to escape. Major season 1 spoilers follow; this guide does not reveal the season 2 ending.
Destaques
Helen appears to have a settled life in London with her husband, Wallace, and their children. For a decade, however, she has also worked for the Black Doves, a covert organization that trades in information. Her access to Wallace’s political world makes her valuable to Reed, the handler who recruited her.
Helen’s secret relationship with Jason Davies gives her a glimpse of another life. When Jason is murdered, Reed brings in Helen’s old friend Sam Young, an assassin who has returned to London after years away. Helen wants answers; Sam’s job is to keep her alive while she looks for them. Their search draws them into the city’s criminal underworld and a crisis involving China and the British government.
The murder investigation is the plot’s engine, but the relationships are the key to remembering it. Helen and Sam repeatedly put each other first, even when doing so makes it harder for either of them to leave their violent work behind. Netflix’s season 1 guide sets out the pair’s starting positions.
Jason’s death is connected to the death of Chinese Ambassador Chen. Trent Clark, the son of London crime boss Alex Clark, accidentally killed Chen during an argument. Trent then ordered Jason, Maggie and Phillip killed to conceal what had happened.
The truth matters because what looks like a politically explosive murder has its roots in a panicked cover-up. Helen eventually confronts the Clarks and points a gun at Trent. Sam shoots both Trent and Alex, taking the immediate burden of that decision away from Helen while making himself a target for the surviving Clark family.
For a refresher on the final confrontation, Netflix’s official season 1 ending explainer includes creator Joe Barton’s account of Sam’s choice.
Jason had a secret of his own: he was an MI5 agent assigned to investigate whether Helen was leaking government information. His work and his relationship with her overlapped, making Helen question how much of their time together was real.
Reed offers Helen a hard drive containing information about Jason, but Helen throws it into the Thames. Barton has said the choice is open to interpretation; his view is that Jason’s love and his decision to protect Helen mattered more to her than the missing details. The distinction is useful going into the next season: Helen knows enough to understand his investigation, but she deliberately leaves parts of his life unexplored.
Helen and Wallace remain together at the end of season 1 and spend Christmas with their children. Their marriage survives, even though Wallace has reason to suspect that Helen has not told him everything about her past. Helen also stays with the Black Doves as Wallace’s political career advances.
Reed’s reach is closer to home than Helen may have assumed. The Webbs’ nanny, Marie, and Wallace’s colleague Dani are also revealed to be Black Doves working for Reed. Remember that detail when judging how much control Helen has over her own cover: the organization has other eyes around her family and Wallace’s work.
For season 2, Netflix’s official trailer guide describes Wallace as preparing to become prime minister and Reed as missing. Those are the setup for the new story, not a guarantee of how Helen’s loyalties will play out.
Sam’s reunion with Michael offers the possibility of a life outside contract killing. The finale closes that door: after Sam kills the Clarks to protect Helen, he knows his work puts Michael in danger. They share a bittersweet farewell rather than a fresh start together.
Sam also leaves unfinished business with the people who employ and threaten him. He does not kill Hector, despite pressure from Lenny, and his relationship with both remains fraught. Eleanor and Williams survive the confrontation with the Clarks, while Ambassador Chen’s daughter Kai-Ming spends Christmas with them.
If you only have time to revisit one episode, the season 1 finale is the most useful choice for the Clark reveal, Jason’s identity and the characters’ parting decisions. For the emotional context behind Sam and Helen’s loyalty, revisit their earlier scenes as well. The full first season has six episodes and is available on Netflix.
