DWP £300 Winter Payment: Who Qualifies for Support in 2026–27?

Verified November 8, 2026, at 1:05 p.m. UTC (London, GMT; UTC+00:00).

Some older people in England, Wales and Northern Ireland could receive a Winter Fuel Payment of up to £300 for winter 2026–27. The amount depends on their date of birth and household circumstances during the qualifying week; it is not an automatic £300 payment for everyone receiving Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) benefits.

Most eligible people will be paid automatically in November or December 2026. Scotland operates a separate Pension Age Winter Heating Payment, worth between £105.55 and £316.70 for eligible recipients. People on lower incomes may also qualify for other help with energy costs.

Destaques

  • For the Winter Fuel Payment, the usual age requirement is a birth date on or before June 27, 1960.
  • An eligible person born before September 28, 1946, who lives alone or with no other eligible person can receive £300.
  • People whose individual income exceeds £35,000 will have their payment recovered by HMRC.
  • Those who need to claim have until March 31, 2027; other programs have separate eligibility rules.

Is there a new £300 DWP winter payment for everyone?

No universal £300 payment should be assumed. The current Winter Fuel Payment guidance describes a payment of £100 to £300 for eligible people in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Receiving Universal Credit or another benefit does not by itself guarantee a £300 Winter Fuel Payment: the age, residence and household rules also matter.

The phrase can also refer to an earlier scheme. A separate £300 cost-of-living payment was made to qualifying recipients of certain means-tested benefits in 2023, while an additional pensioner cost-of-living payment was included with Winter Fuel Payments in 2022–23 and 2023–24. Those historical payments should not be treated as a new award for winter 2026–27. The government’s cost-of-living payment guidance sets out the earlier qualifying periods.

Who qualifies for the 2026–27 Winter Fuel Payment?

Generally, you must have been born on or before June 27, 1960, and usually live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland. The qualifying week is September 21–27, 2026. Some circumstances can exclude you, including being in prison for the whole qualifying week or being in hospital for free treatment throughout that week and the preceding year.

Care-home rules also matter. For example, a person who lived in a care home throughout the period starting June 29, 2026, or earlier and ending with the qualifying week is not eligible if they received Universal Credit, Pension Credit or income-related Employment and Support Allowance. Review the full eligibility conditions if your circumstances are unusual.

Who gets £300, and who gets less?

If you live alone, or nobody you live with is eligible, the published amounts are £200 if you were born from September 28, 1946, through June 27, 1960, and £300 if you were born before September 28, 1946.

If you live with another eligible person, the amount can differ. For instance, where neither person receives the specified means-tested benefits, two eligible people both born before September 28, 1946, would normally receive £150 each. If an eligible couple jointly claims Pension Credit, Universal Credit or income-related Employment and Support Allowance, one partner receives £300 when either was born before that date, or £200 if both were born between September 28, 1946, and June 27, 1960.

Eligible care-home residents receive £100 or £150, depending on their date of birth. Other household combinations have their own rates, so check the official payment tables against your situation during the qualifying week. The payment does not reduce other benefits.

Does income affect the payment?

Income does not prevent an otherwise eligible person from receiving the payment initially, but HM Revenue and Customs will recover it if that person’s total income is over £35,000. A partner’s income is not added to the individual’s income for this threshold. HMRC says recovery can happen through a tax-code adjustment or a Self Assessment tax return. The same individual-income threshold applies to Scotland’s Pension Age Winter Heating Payment.

When will payments arrive, and do you need to claim?

Most eligible people receive the payment automatically. A letter in October or November should explain the amount and the account into which it will be paid. Most payments arrive in November or December. If you have not received a letter or payment by January 27, 2027, contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre using the details on GOV.UK’s payment page.

You normally do not need to claim if you receive the State Pension or one of the other listed benefits. If you do not receive a listed benefit, you may need to claim if you have never received a Winter Fuel Payment or have deferred your State Pension since your last payment. Claims for 2026–27 can be made by post or phone, and the deadline is March 31, 2027. Check the claim instructions before applying.

What winter support is available in Scotland?

Scotland’s Pension Age Winter Heating Payment replaces the Winter Fuel Payment there. For 2026–27, a person generally must have been born on or before June 27, 1960, and lived in Scotland on at least the last day of the September 21–27 qualifying week. Other exclusions and care-home rules apply. Most payments are automatic, start in November and continue through winter; contact Social Security Scotland if you believe you qualify and have not been paid by the start of March 2027.

Scotland also has a separate Winter Heating Payment for eligible people receiving certain benefits. Unlike Cold Weather Payments elsewhere, it does not depend on a spell of freezing weather.

What other help is available with heating bills?

  • Cold Weather Payment: In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, eligible recipients of certain benefits can receive £25 for each qualifying seven-day period when the local average temperature is recorded or forecast at 0°C or below, between November 1, 2026, and March 31, 2027. Payment is normally automatic. See the Cold Weather Payment guidance for the benefit conditions.
  • Warm Home Discount: This is a £150 energy bill discount, not a cash payment. Rules differ across England, Wales and Scotland, and the scheme is not available in Northern Ireland. In England and Wales, eligibility generally depends on the supplier, the electricity account and qualifying means-tested benefits on August 23, 2026. See GOV.UK’s scheme overview.
  • Local help: Councils may offer support with essentials. In England, assistance is available through the Crisis and Resilience Fund; eligibility and application arrangements vary locally. Scotland and Wales have separate welfare funds. Start with the local council support guide.

Keep your award letter and check your bank account before reporting a missing payment. Be cautious with unexpected messages asking for bank details or passwords; use official contact information rather than a link in a suspicious message.

Frequently asked questions

Will everyone on Universal Credit get £300 this winter?

No. Universal Credit alone does not guarantee a £300 Winter Fuel Payment. Age, residence and household circumstances must also meet the relevant rules.

Can I receive both a Winter Fuel Payment and a Warm Home Discount?

Yes, if you qualify for each separately. The Warm Home Discount does not affect the Winter Fuel Payment.

What if I missed the qualifying week?

Eligibility is assessed against the published rules and your circumstances during the qualifying week. Check the relevant government guidance or contact the administering agency if you are unsure how those rules apply to you.
