Kimi Antonelli and the F1 Standings: How Do the Points Work?

If you open a Formula 1 standings page after a race and wonder why a driver’s total changed while a pole position did not, separate the sessions first. Championship points come from the Grand Prix classification and, at selected events, the Sprint classification. Qualifying sets the grid; it does not award points. This guide uses the 2026 rules and standings checked on November 2, 2026.

Kimi Antonelli has already secured the 2026 Drivers’ Championship. He clinched the title with third place in the Mexico City Grand Prix on Sunday, November 1, at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City. The official F1 race report records 15 points for that finish. The current 2026 drivers’ standings list Antonelli on 380, Max Verstappen on 261, and Lewis Hamilton on 259.

The quick way to read an F1 points table

  • Check the final official Grand Prix classification and award the race points for each finishing position.
  • If the weekend includes a Sprint, add its separate points as well.
  • Add every event’s points to the driver’s season total; the driver’s team also receives the points scored by both of its cars.
  • Check for a shortened-session rule or a post-race classification change before treating a total as final.

The championship is cumulative: a driver does not have to win a minimum number of races, and a strong result is not averaged against weaker ones. The FIA awards points for competitions that take place, and the season title goes to the driver with the highest total. The Constructors’ Championship uses the combined points from both cars entered by each team.

Grand Prix points: the standard full-distance scale

In a regular full-distance Grand Prix, the top 10 classified finishers score. The table below is the 2026 standard race scale, also summarized in Formula 1’s beginner’s guide to the F1 weekend.

Grand Prix finishPoints
1st25
2nd18
3rd15
4th12
5th10
6th8
7th6
8th4
9th2
10th1

A driver classified outside the top 10 earns no standard position-based race points. The official classification matters: the order shown while cars are still running can change through penalties or other decisions after the checkered flag. Pole position and qualifying place do not add points to the championship total, even though they can shape a driver’s chance of scoring on race day.

Sprint points are a separate addition

Six weekends in the 2026 season use the Sprint format. A Sprint is a shorter race with its own classification and points, separate from Sunday’s Grand Prix. The top eight score:

Sprint finishPoints
1st8
2nd7
3rd6
4th5
5th4
6th3
7th2
8th1

Those Sprint points count toward both championships. Sprint qualifying determines the Sprint starting order but awards no championship points; Grand Prix qualifying likewise sets the Sunday grid rather than the standings. Formula 1’s Sprint guide explains the weekend format and points scale.

Why Antonelli’s total is 380

Antonelli’s Mexico City result is a useful points check. Before that event, Formula 1’s October 26 title-permutations report listed him on 365 points after the United States Grand Prix. Third place in Mexico City paid 15 points under the standard Grand Prix scale: 365 + 15 = 380. The official standings now show that total.

Position after Mexico CityDriverPoints
1Kimi Antonelli380
2Max Verstappen261
3Lewis Hamilton259
4George Russell250
5Charles Leclerc245

The earlier F1 title-permutations report showed how the points gap and remaining results could decide the championship. The November 1 race report confirms that Antonelli’s podium secured the title. That means the 2026 champion is decided, while the season’s remaining results can still affect the points totals and positions elsewhere in the standings.

Shortened races and other details to check

Full points are not automatic if a Grand Prix ends early. Under the 2026 FIA rules, no race points are awarded unless the leader has completed at least two consecutive laps without a Safety Car or Virtual Safety Car procedure. If the race stops before 75% of its scheduled distance, a reduced scale applies; the precise awards depend on how much distance the leader completed. At 75% or more, the standard Grand Prix scale applies. The Sprint has its own threshold: it must reach at least 50% of scheduled distance, in addition to the minimum-lap condition, for points to be awarded.

These exceptions are set out in Article A2.2 of the FIA’s 2026 General Regulatory Provisions, Issue 02 dated February 27, 2026. If two drivers or teams finish the championship on equal points, the FIA first compares race wins, then second-place finishes, then third places, continuing through the results until the tie is broken. If that sequence still does not decide it, the regulations compare qualifying results.

Quick self-check after a race

  • Use the final official classification, not a provisional running order.
  • Apply the Grand Prix scale to Sunday’s race, and add Sprint points only if that weekend held a Sprint.
  • Remember that qualifying and Sprint qualifying set grids but do not score championship points.
  • For a shortened race or Sprint, check the distance thresholds in the FIA regulations.
  • Compare the updated official standings after any penalties or classification decisions.

For Antonelli, the arithmetic is direct: 365 points before Mexico City, plus 15 for third place, equals 380. The separate title question is also settled: the official post-race report says his Mexico City podium clinched the 2026 Drivers’ Championship.
