Steam Free Games in October 2026: What You Can Claim and How

Looking for free Steam games in October 2026? Start with Steam’s free-to-play catalog, then check individual store pages for limited-time “Free to Keep” offers. A free weekend or demo is not the same as owning a game permanently. As of October 29, one verified limited-time offer is a free downloadable content pack for Hunting Simulator 3—not the full game.

Which Steam offers can you claim in late October 2026?

Steam promotions change quickly, and there is no single guaranteed list of full games being given away throughout the month. These are the options worth checking now:

A verified October offer: Hunting Simulator 3 DLC

Steam lists the Hunting Simulator 3 – Classic American Hunter Pack for $0 during its promotional window, down from its listed $4.99 price. The package includes a rifle, a hunting dog breed, and a hat variation. Importantly, Steam says the content requires Hunting Simulator 3; claiming it does not give you the base game.

The store lists a deadline of November 12, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST, UTC−08:00), which is 18:00 UTC on November 12. U.S. daylight saving time ends on November 1, so the deadline falls under standard time, not daylight time. Confirm availability and the terms on the Hunting Simulator 3 – Classic American Hunter Pack store page before claiming; eligibility and store displays may vary.

How do you find genuinely free Steam games?

1. Open the Steam Store. Sign in through the Steam desktop app or the official website.
2. Browse the free-to-play category. The Steam’s Free to Play catalog includes established options such as Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, Warframe, and Marvel Rivals. These are not limited October giveaways.
3. Check a title’s store page. Read the purchase or download button and any end date. “Free to Play,” “Play for Free,” “Download Demo,” and “Free to Keep” can indicate different entitlements.
4. Inspect what is included. A free soundtrack, cosmetic pack, DLC, or prologue is not necessarily a free full game. Look for “requires the base game” before claiming an add-on.
5. Verify the price before checkout. For a free-to-keep offer, the eligible item should display $0.00 and an appropriate action such as “Add to Account.” Do not complete a paid purchase assuming it will later be refunded.

How do you claim a limited-time free-to-keep offer?

Open the eligible item’s official Steam page while the offer is active. Sign in, review the package contents, and choose Add to Account if that button appears. Follow any account prompts and check your library or account licenses afterward. You generally do not need to download a claimed game immediately to keep a permanent free-to-keep license, but you must claim it before the offer ends.

If Steam only shows “Play for Free” with a trial deadline, treat it as temporary access. If you see “Download Demo,” expect a limited preview instead. For DLC, confirm you own or can access the required base game. Some content may have regional, account, or platform restrictions.

What happened to Steam Next Fest and Steam Scream V?

Steam Next Fest’s October 2026 edition ran October 19–26. Valve advertised free demos for unreleased games; the event ended on October 26 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time (PDT, UTC−07:00), or 17:00 UTC. The festival ending does not mean every demo disappears—developers can keep demos available separately. Browse the Steam’s demo listings to see what remains playable, and see the Steam Next Fest’s October event page for the event description.

Steam Scream V runs through November 2, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST, UTC−08:00), or 18:00 UTC. The Halloween-themed event primarily highlights spooky games and discounts, not a promise of free-to-keep titles. A discounted game is still paid unless its own store page explicitly offers a free entitlement. Valve’s announcement is available in the Steam’s official news archive.

How can you avoid missing an offer or claiming the wrong item?

• Check the exact deadline. Steam pages may display a time adjusted for your account or browser; a sale banner for a broader event is not necessarily the game’s individual deadline.
• Distinguish permanent from temporary. Free-to-keep means you claim a lasting license during a limited window; free weekend means temporary play access; free-to-play means the game’s basic access is offered at no upfront cost.
• Check the edition and content type. DLC and bundles may require a separate paid base game, and free editions may omit paid content.
• Read hardware requirements. A free title is only useful if it runs on your computer; check the game’s operating system, storage, and other requirements.
• Use official pages to confirm deals. Promotion trackers and social posts can help you discover an offer, but the live Steam listing determines what your account can claim.

Is a “free Steam game” link safe?

Not automatically. Fake giveaway messages can imitate Steam and ask for account passwords, verification codes, or unrelated downloads. Open the Steam client yourself or navigate directly to an official Steam domain instead of trusting an unexpected message. Enable Steam Guard and follow Steam’s account security recommendations. Never share your Steam Guard code with someone offering a free game.

Bottom line: For October 2026, check Steam’s free-to-play games any time, look for legitimate $0.00 “Add to Account” promotions on individual store pages, and treat demos and trial weekends as temporary experiences. For the confirmed Hunting Simulator 3 DLC offer, remember that the full game is not included and the claim window ends November 12.
