Why Alphabet (GOOGL) Fell 12.64% on October 29, 2026: Earnings and AI Spending

Alphabet's Class A shares (Nasdaq: GOOGL) plunged 12.64% on Thursday, October 29, 2026, closing at $283.82 versus $324.89 the previous day. The selloff followed Alphabet's third-quarter earnings announcement and reflected two main concerns: results that fell short of parts of Wall Street's expectations and the growing cash required to expand its artificial intelligence infrastructure. Those are explanations supported by earnings figures and market reporting, not proof that any one factor caused the entire price move.

What happened to GOOGL on October 29?

The October 29 closing price represented a $41.07 decline per share. It was the first full U.S. regular trading session after Alphabet announced its results on Wednesday, October 28. The October 29 session ended at 4:00 p.m. in New York, Eastern Daylight Time (EDT, UTC−04:00), or 20:00 UTC. These are historical Nasdaq-listed Class A share prices in U.S. dollars, not a live quote.

  • October 28 close: $324.89.
  • October 29 close: $283.82, down 12.64%.
  • October 30 close: $279.84, down about 1.40% from October 29.

The second decline matters: the stock did not immediately recover the October 29 loss in the next regular session. However, two trading days are not enough to establish a lasting trend. The October 30 figures refer to that day's close, not a continuation of October 29's percentage move.

What Alphabet actually reported in Q3 2026

Alphabet's official third-quarter earnings release covers the three months ended September 30, 2026. The headline figures were strong in absolute terms, but the details explain why the market response could still be negative.

MeasureQ3 2026 resultContext
Total revenue$127.58 billionUp 25% year over year
Google Services revenue$96.30 billionUp 11% year over year
Google Search & other revenue$63.35 billionUp 12% year over year
Google Cloud revenue$30.71 billionUp 103% year over year
Operating income$40.58 billionUp 30% year over year
GAAP diluted EPS$2.12Versus $2.87 a year earlier

A small revenue miss still mattered

According to Associated Press reporting based on FactSet estimates, analysts had expected approximately $127.97 billion in quarterly revenue. Alphabet's $127.58 billion was about $390 million below that consensus. This was a modest miss relative to the company's scale, but expectations affect share prices as much as year-over-year growth. AP also reported that Search and YouTube advertising growth came in below some analysts' projections.

GAAP EPS was affected by an investment loss

Alphabet reported GAAP diluted earnings of $2.12 per share and $26.17 billion in net income available to common stockholders, down from $34.98 billion a year earlier. Its filings identify an approximately $8.7 billion loss on equity securities, which reduced diluted EPS by $0.55 after tax effects. AP cited analyst EPS expectations of roughly $3.01, but that consensus should not automatically be treated as directly comparable with a normalized or adjusted earnings figure. Alphabet's $2.12 is the company's reported GAAP result; simply adding back $0.55 would not establish an officially reported adjusted EPS measure.

Why AI spending weighed on the shares

Alphabet spent $51.36 billion on property and equipment in Q3, up from $44.92 billion in the preceding quarter. Quarterly operating cash flow remained positive at $42.29 billion, but it was lower than capital expenditures. As a result, Alphabet reported negative $9.07 billion in free cash flow, its second consecutive negative quarter under the company's non-GAAP definition. Negative free cash flow does not mean the operating business lost money; it shows that cash investment exceeded operating cash generated during the period.

The scale and duration of this buildout are central to the market debate. AP reported that Chief Financial Officer Anat Ashkenazi expected capital spending to increase significantly again in 2027. Data centers, processors and other AI infrastructure can create future revenue capacity, but the cash goes out before all of the economic benefits arrive. Higher depreciation and operating costs can also affect subsequent profits. Investors therefore have to weigh faster AI growth against the time required to earn an attractive return on the investment.

There was a substantial counterargument within the same earnings release: Google Cloud revenue more than doubled to $30.71 billion, and its operating income reached $11.12 billion, up from $3.59 billion a year earlier. Alphabet said AI infrastructure and solutions were major drivers of Cloud growth. The selloff should not be confused with evidence that its AI business lacked demand.

Why Search performance remained a concern

Google Search & other revenue increased 12%, and Alphabet said year-over-year Search query growth was at its highest rate in five years. Nevertheless, some analysts had anticipated stronger advertising results. That matters because Search remains a major cash-generating business and helps finance Alphabet's cloud and AI expansion.

One market concern is whether AI assistants and AI-enhanced search will change the number, format or economics of traditional search ads. That is a risk scenario, not a demonstrated explanation for a particular day's share-price decline. Alphabet's own statements pointed to increasing queries, including commercial queries, while reported advertising revenue gave investors a more concrete measure of monetization. Both signals deserve consideration.

What the October 30 close means—and what it does not

GOOGL finished Friday, October 30 at $279.84, another $3.98 below Thursday's close. The historical price series shows that selling pressure persisted into the next session, but the data do not by themselves say whether investors had reached a new fair value for Alphabet. A later rebound or further decline would require fresh evidence and cannot be inferred from this two-day move.

The most useful questions after these results are specific: Can Search advertising deliver growth that meets expectations? How much of the rapid Cloud expansion translates into sustainable profits? And when might higher AI capital spending translate into stronger free cash flow? The October 29 decline reflected a reassessment of those trade-offs, even as Alphabet continued reporting strong revenue and operating income growth.
