Windows default Notepad application is so good that you wont need another application to replace it.
Many people have been using the revamped version of Notepad Classic since its release and it has become an indispensable tool for capturing ideas, organizing notes, and keeping daily notebooks. They use it all day, every day, without even realizing how it has become an integral part of their workflow.
1. Multi-tab support is a game changer
While you might consider tab support unnecessary if you only use Notepad as a notebook, this feature is a game-changer for many people's workflows. It allows you to quickly jot down new ideas, pending tasks, new opportunities, references, and quotes - all separated into separate tabs.

Multiple tabs make it easy to work with multiple documents, and each tab is neatly labeled to help you keep track of what’s where. This setup lets you open multiple text files in the same window while keeping them separate. You can also drag a tab out to create a new window, where each additional file opens in its own tab. If you prefer the classic behavior, you can adjust the settings to open files in separate windows.
2. Auto-save helps you in many important situations
Autosave is a handy feature in Microsoft Word and it is also present in the new Notepad. As you might expect from the name, this feature automatically saves your current session so you don’t lose your work if you close Notepad without saving or if your system crashes. The next time you open Notepad, it will be there for you to pick up.
Open Notepad settings to enable or disable autosave
Autosave enhances Notepad's functionality as a notebook. You can simply create a new file and use it without having to save a file you don't intend to keep for a long time. However, if you prefer the old behavior, you can open the Settings gear menu and change the When Notepad starts option to Start new sessions and discard unsaved changes .
3. Copilot and AI make writing easier
Notepad is now suitable for composing quick emails or even formal messages, thanks to Copilot . Notepad now supports Rewrite (currently in Preview mode), which can rewrite sentences with the help of Microsoft's AI.
You can adjust the tone, length, and format to get customized feedback from Rewrite. For example, you can rewrite a paragraph to sound more persuasive while keeping it shorter or longer.

To use Rewrite in Notepad, you'll need a Microsoft 365 Personal/Family or Copilot Pro subscription . This feature is currently available in select regions and requires you to sign in with your Microsoft account. If you don't see the Rewrite option yet, updating to the latest version of Notepad from the Microsoft Store may help.
4. Dark Mode and personalization
The new Notepad is updated to look and feel more like part of Windows 11 , thanks to a modern header and a dedicated Settings tab to access and tweak more options.
The settings interface now has a Theme option, allowing you to finally enable Dark Mode on Notepad . By default, it will follow your system settings, automatically adjusting the theme.

You can personalize the font family, style, and size to suit your preferences. Additionally, Notepad now includes spell check (which highlights misspelled words and suggests corrections), along with autocorrect (which automatically corrects typos when spell check is turned on).
Despite the overhaul, Notepad is still a basic, easy-to-use text editor. Microsoft has upgraded the browser with just the right amount of useful features, including tab support, AI integration, and an automatic spell checker, while keeping the browser as lightweight as possible.
