5 Alternatives to Google Chrome Bookmarks
Google Bookmarks is shutting down in 2021, but that doesn't mean there aren't other options. There are a variety of Google Bookmarks alternatives, and here are five of the best available today.
Raindrop has all the basics covered. It includes an import feature that makes it easy to transfer from other bookmarking apps, and it has browser extensions for major browsers. It also makes organizing easy with its tagging system and Collections feature .
The most impressive feature of saving bookmarks in Raindrop, however, is that you can do more than organize them with tags and collections. You can optionally add notes, favorite bookmarks, and even add reminders.
Retrieval is also easy thanks to the built-in search feature, although you need to upgrade to get full-text search capabilities. Additionally, Raindrop includes permanent copies, broken and duplicate link detection, annotations, highlighting, and more, but some of these features are paid.
Instapaper is another bookmarking app that can be a great alternative to Google Bookmarks. It uses a tagging system and has folders to organize your bookmarks. In addition to saving bookmarks, Instapaper also supports highlighting.
The interface is simple enough, so if you like simplicity, then it doesn’t get any better than this. Additionally, the app has an import feature that allows you to import bookmarks from various apps.
Instapaper also has a search function, although like the other options, you'll have to pay to access full-text search. There are also a number of other features, like permanent archiving, but you'll have to pay to use them.
Matter has a few features that make it a worthy alternative. In the browser, you can organize content as you save by adding or selecting one of your saved tags. Matter also lets you add notes or favorite bookmarks.
The app's web interface has a Home tab where you can discover interesting content to bookmark on the web, just like on Pocket. However, the discovery capabilities are not as robust as Pocket's. The main advantage over all other alternatives is the powerful sorting and filtering capabilities.
Matter also supports highlighting and searching, and offers additional features like Kindle integration, but you'll have to upgrade. The main downside is that there's no Android app.
One of the best read later apps, PaperSpan, is another bookmarking app that has all your needs in one place. When saving, PaperSpan lets you choose the folder to save your content to. The app provides a Read Later folder by default, but you can also create your own folders for better categorization.
If you’re coming from another bookmarking app, PaperSpan includes an import feature, although as of this writing, only Pocket and Instapaper are supported. And unlike previous options, there’s no tagging system here, and the interface isn’t as modern. However, the app does have extensions and bookmarklets for select browsers, along with standalone apps for Android and iOS.
Pocket is one of the best Google Bookmark alternatives on the market. It packs in a lot of features that make it one of the best bookmark managers. First, it offers a browser extension or a booklet to save bookmarks.
You can tag anything for easy organization and retrieval. And if tagging isn’t your thing, Pocket also offers a special Collections feature that works like folders to group related bookmarks. You can also sort bookmarks by when they were saved. There’s also highlight support, which is great for saving long articles. And if you need even more organization, Pocket has filters for that.
Another great feature that many people love is the app's curated content. This makes it easy to discover new and interesting articles that you wouldn't otherwise stumble across on the web. Pocket requires a subscription for other features, like permanent bookmarks, unlimited bookmarking, full-text search, and more.
Pocket stands out because it makes it easy to save, organize, and retrieve bookmarks, plus it lets users discover interesting content on the web in one place. Raindrop comes in second because its lack of content discovery is a minus.
