Centrelink Payment Cancellation Review: How to Check if Youre Affected

Updated October 28, 2026 (Australia). The Australian government has begun inviting people to seek compensation for certain incorrect Centrelink payment cancellations. At the same time, two parts of the Targeted Compliance Framework restarted on October 26, 2026, after being paused over concerns about how decisions were made. If your income support was stopped in an earlier year, the key questions are why it was canceled, when it happened, and whether the cancellation caused you a loss.

The Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR) is sending compensation invitations in batches, beginning in October 2026. You do not need to assume you are excluded just because no invitation has arrived. But an invitation is not an automatic entitlement to compensation either. The official starting point is DEWR’s payment cancellation compensation guidance.

Who could be affected by the Centrelink payment cancellation review?

The current compensation program covers specified decisions under the Social Security (Administration) Act 1999. The categories and dates matter more than whether you are receiving Centrelink payments today.

Reason recorded for cancellationRelevant decision datesWhy the decision is being examined
Work refusal failure, such as refusing or not accepting suitable workApril 8, 2022–December 31, 2025Decision-makers may not have appropriately considered individual circumstances.
Unemployment failure, including leaving suitable employment voluntarily or dismissal for misconductApril 8, 2022–December 31, 2025Some decisions may not have involved appropriate discretion.
Failure to meet a four-week reconnection requirement after suspensionDecember 7, 2020–December 31, 2025A system issue meant the four-week deadline was generally calculated too early in some cases.

These categories relate to participation-based income support, including JobSeeker Payment, Youth Allowance for job seekers, certain Parenting Payment recipients, and certain Special Benefit recipients. Not everyone who receives one of these payments qualifies. A different reason for cancellation, such as changed income or no longer meeting eligibility criteria, does not automatically bring a decision into this review.

There is also a separate earlier review of cancellations for persistent mutual obligation failures between April 8, 2022 and July 4, 2024. DEWR identified 964 people affected by 985 cancellation decisions in that group and has been reviewing and compensating eligible cases. If that description matches your situation, consult the department’s persistent mutual obligation failure review page rather than assuming the new invitation program is the only avenue.

How to check whether your payment was affected

1. Find the cancellation notice and date

Sign in directly at my.gov.au, open your linked Centrelink account, and check your messages and payment records. Services Australia says Centrelink letters can be viewed through the myGov Inbox or the Express Plus Centrelink app; online letters are generally available for up to two years. Older notices may require you to request records from Services Australia. See the official instructions for viewing Centrelink letters online.

Look for the date your payment ended, the stated reason, any references to a mutual obligation or reconnection requirement, and whether the action was a temporary suspension or a full cancellation. Keep copies of letters, provider messages, receipts, and any earlier review outcomes. These records help you compare your case with DEWR’s published categories.

2. Compare the stated reason with the official review periods

Use the table above as a screening guide, not a final eligibility ruling. A cancellation during one of these periods does not mean it was unlawful in your specific case. Conversely, a notice might not use the exact legal wording shown on DEWR’s website. If the reason is unclear, ask Centrelink for an explanation of the decision and DEWR which compensation pathway applies.

3. Look out for a DEWR invitation, but verify it independently

DEWR says it will email people it identifies as potentially eligible, with invitations sent over several months. The department will announce when the invitation process has finished. If you believe you suffered a direct financial or non-financial loss, the department says you can apply even without an invitation, and applications can be made at any time.

For security, do not sign in to myGov through a link in an unexpected email or text. Services Australia warns that impersonators send fake payment-suspension messages. Instead, type the official government site address into your browser and use the contact details published on DEWR’s page. See Services Australia’s Centrelink email scam warning.

How to apply for compensation

The compensation route is the Compensation for Detriment caused by Defective Administration (CDDA) scheme. It concerns harm linked to incorrect administration; it is not a flat-rate payout for every former job seeker.

  1. Read the eligibility criteria and download the official application for compensation for incorrect payment cancellations.
  2. Explain why you believe the cancellation decision was wrong, your circumstances at the time, and the financial or non-financial impact.
  3. Attach supporting evidence where you have it. DEWR accepts that some records from earlier years may no longer be available.
  4. Email the completed application and evidence to TCF-Review@dewr.gov.au, using TCF compensation application as the subject line. If email is unavailable, the form can be mailed to DEWR, Attention: TCF Remediation Team, GPO Box 9828, Canberra ACT 2601. Mail copies, not original documents.

For a claim limited to income support you would otherwise have received, DEWR says a written statement will usually be sufficient. Additional financial losses totaling up to A$250 will also usually need minimal evidence. Claims for additional financial or non-financial losses over A$250 require supporting evidence, such as bank records, rent statements, receipts, or relevant medical reports. Even if you cannot supply evidence, DEWR says it will consider the information available.

Examples of possible financial harm include missing income support, late bill charges, additional loan interest, and expenses directly arising from losing accommodation. Non-financial loss under this scheme has a narrower meaning: it can involve physical or psychiatric injury or damage to reputation. Ordinary frustration or stress alone does not necessarily qualify. The department also considers any back payment already received, so compensation and back pay should not be treated as automatically separate amounts owed in full.

When will you receive a decision or payment?

DEWR aims to assess compensation applications within 90 days, but explicitly warns this may take longer. An invitation only lets you apply; the department must assess your circumstances and evidence before deciding. You will receive the decision in writing. If compensation is approved, Services Australia makes the payment and sends payment advice. DEWR does not publish a guaranteed individual payment amount or approval date.

You can contact DEWR about your claim at TCF-Review@dewr.gov.au or call 1800 805 260 for general application-process information. People needing independent assistance may be able to obtain free advice through a community legal center listed by Economic Justice Australia.

What if you want the cancellation decision reviewed?

A Centrelink decision review and a CDDA compensation application are different processes. If you disagree with the underlying decision to cancel your payment, Services Australia allows you to request an explanation or apply for a formal review by an Authorised Review Officer. You can request an explanation at any time, and you do not have to obtain an explanation before requesting a formal review.

For most claim and entitlement decisions, Services Australia recommends applying for a formal review within 13 weeks of being told about the decision. Later applications are possible, but any backdated entitlement may be limited. If you disagree with the Authorised Review Officer’s result, an Administrative Review Tribunal review may be available. Follow the official Centrelink explanation and formal review instructions and seek tailored advice about older decisions.

If you dispute DEWR’s compensation decision, the department says its outcome letter will explain how to request a review. This is separate from appealing the original Centrelink decision.

What changes for people receiving Centrelink now?

Since October 26, 2026, cancellation decisions for failing to meet a reconnection requirement within four weeks have resumed, as have payment suspensions for work refusal failures. Under the reinstated process, affected participants generally have five business days to re-engage or provide a valid reason before suspension, followed by a four-week reconnection period after notification before cancellation may occur. Other payment-reduction and cancellation powers for persistent failures, unemployment failures, and work refusal cancellations remain paused pending safeguards, with DEWR expecting further changes in early 2027.

If your current payment is on hold, promptly contact your employment services provider, or the Workforce Australia Digital Services Contact Centre at 1800 314 677 if you do not have a provider. Check your Job Plan and respond to any reconnection notice rather than waiting for the historical compensation review. DEWR’s current Targeted Compliance Framework guidance explains the applicable rules.

Bottom line

If Centrelink canceled your participation payment during the relevant periods, find the original decision, identify its reason, and check DEWR’s official compensation criteria. You may be able to claim for losses even if you have received no invitation yet. Keep the historical compensation process separate from any urgent steps needed to protect a payment you receive today.
