Engineers at startup Cognition Labs have just launched Devin, an AI tool that can automatically write code and take on the work of software engineers on recruiting sites like Upwork without human intervention.
A video showcasing Devin's code editing steps and workflow as it works on programming and data research projects was shared by Cognition Labs CEO Scott Wu.
After receiving the request, Devin will search for training materials on the Internet to learn how to work and handle errors encountered during the technical process. Devin users can intervene if they want.
In Bloomberg's tests, Devin learned basic game programming and took just 20 minutes to create a website from scratch. Devin can help non-technical people develop their own projects, as well as difficult, time-consuming tasks.
AI is growing so fast that learning to code seems less and less important. Devin's presence could completely eliminate low-level technical jobs from the market.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang recently sparked controversy when he said that children should not learn programming. He said that AI will help humans take over this job. Therefore, people should learn skills to become experts in more useful fields.
However, technology analyst Patrick Moorhead argues that we still don't have enough programmers today, and AI isn't destroying programming but putting it in the hands of more people.
