Dont buy a Nintendo Switch now, wait for the Switch 2!
The Nintendo Switch is a great console, and there are plenty of great Switch games to choose from. But if you're still on the fence about whether or not to buy one, you're right to be concerned. Here's why it might be worth holding off a little longer.
1. Nintendo Switch is nearing the end of its life cycle
The original Nintendo Switch was released in 2017. That means the Switch is nearing the end of its life cycle.
The 2021 OLED model also doesn’t improve on specs or performance, and it’s capable of recording video at 720p on the console’s screen and 1080p when docked, just like the original Switch.
Overall, the Switch feels a bit dated compared to other consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It may struggle to run some modern games. It makes sense that developers will soon stop making games for older consoles and instead focus on the next generation of consoles.
Sure, you can play a ton of classic Nintendo games on the Switch, all of which are available via Nintendo Switch Online. But theoretically, you could do the same with the next-generation console, too.
2. Switch 2 is likely to launch soon
There's been a lot of talk about the Switch's successor console for a while, but there's never been a better time to make it official.
In May, Engadget reported that Nintendo would reveal the Switch's successor console sometime this fiscal year, which ends in March 2025. This means we can expect the Switch 2 - or whatever Nintendo decides to call it - to launch soon.
Nintendo also lowered its Switch sales forecast for the fiscal year ending March 2025. In fact, Switch sales have been slowing over the past few years, another sign that the company may be preparing for the launch of its next console.
3. Switch 2 could cost just $400
With all the leaks and rumors surrounding it, very few have been accurate. But a recent leak regarding the PS5 Pro turned out to be accurate, and Sony has finally announced the PS5 Pro on the rumored date.
BGR cites the same leaker, Discord user moistycharlie, with rumors about the price of the Switch's successor. According to the leak, the new console could cost as little as $400. If true, that's the most compelling argument yet for holding off on buying the Switch, which launched at $299 and hasn't been discounted in many regions.
It seems almost certain that Nintendo will announce a successor to the Switch in the coming months, so if you decide to buy a Nintendo Switch now, you won't have much time to upgrade. That, combined with the fact that there's no official confirmation of backward compatibility with the Switch's successor, makes waiting probably the wiser option.
