Experience changing your iPhone battery at home with a toolkit in two 35kg suitcases from Apple
The Verge's Sean Hollister signed up for Apple's Self Service Repair service to replace the battery on his iPhone 13 mini. Let's see what Apple's at-home repair solution is like through Hollister's experience.
Hollister had to rent Apple’s toolkit for $49 for a week, and had to put down a $1,200 credit card deposit, which he would forfeit if he failed to return the tool on time or damaged it. Apple then sent him two giant toolboxes that weighed up to 80 pounds. In Apple's 2 tool boxes are all the necessary equipment such as heaters, fixed covers, instruction books... to help users repair themselves in the best way.The first step in replacing an iPhone’s battery is to loosen the adhesive surrounding the screen. To do this, Hollister placed the iPhone in a heating pad and placed it on the heater. On the first try, the machine gave an error. Hollister had to review the manual. Accordingly, to separate the screen from the body, Hollister had to turn a round knob to apply more pressure to the suction cup. After successfully separating the screen, Hollister removes the remaining adhesive between the screen and the body using Apple's adhesive removal tool and secures the case to keep the device from moving.Hollister continued to remove the screws attached to the display cable and bottom speaker using three different screwdriver tips.Apple's kit includes a battery bag, a battery holder, and new adhesive to the body. Hollister replaces the battery according to the instructions. After separating the screen, there was still glue around the iPhone, so Hollister had to peel off the old glue to avoid the screen not being completely flat after reassembling it into the phone frame. Then, Hollister used Apple's tool to press the screen into the iPhone frame.Once completed, Hollister plugged in and turned on his iPhone 13 mini, which now reported that the part was not genuine. Hollister needed to use a computer connected to Wi-Fi to contact an Apple-authorized accessory service provider. During this process, the user had to turn off the phone, enter diagnostic mode, and allow the technician to access and confirm the part.Hollister’s cost for replacing the iPhone battery at home included a $49 one-week rental of the kit, $69 for the battery, which is the same price as an authorized repair center, and a $1,200 credit card deposit. Apple provided free round-trip shipping for the kit, which arrived in two 75-pound suitcases.Hollister said that the process of repairing Apple devices yourself is not easy, and users face the risk of losing their $1,200 deposit. Therefore, it is best for users to contact the warranty center or technicians for support.
