Gmail is about to make a big change to how it authenticates accounts.
Google will soon change the way users authenticate their Gmail accounts. Instead of the familiar SMS security code, Google is switching to a more secure method.
Switch from SMS to QR code for Gmail authentication

First reported by Forbes, Google is planning to switch from SMS to QR codes . The main reason for this decision is because of SMS exploitation by hackers.
Gmail spokesperson Ross Richendrfer explained to Forbes what's coming soon:
“Over the next few months, we’re redesigning how phone number verification works. Instead of entering your phone number and receiving a 6-digit code, you’ll see a QR code displayed that you’ll need to scan using your phone’s camera app.”
SMS codes are a popular way to provide two-factor authentication , but attackers continue to find ways to exploit the feature.
There are a number of ways SMS can be hijacked, such as SIM swapping, where an attacker tricks your mobile phone service provider into transferring your number to a new SIM card, allowing them to intercept messages, including security codes. Hackers can also intercept SMS messages in transit.
Longtime Gmail users are happy to see Google roll out such a big change. Hopefully it will roll out soon. Google says you can still use more secure authenticator apps.
Along with the change in authentication method, Google and many other websites and services have switched from passwords to passkeys. Passkeys overcome the disadvantages of passwords and make the whole login process much easier.
Improving security should always be a top priority. Making these small but important changes can help keep you safer online.
