Google Officially Removes Manifest V2 Extensions in Chrome
It has been a long time coming and the day has finally come. People are reporting that their old Manifest v2 extension is being removed from Chrome. So what happens now?
Google begins removing Manifest v2 extensions from Chrome
User reports began to emerge from both Reddit and X, with many claiming that old extensions that relied on Manifest v2 were being “disabled,” according to Chrome. The browser then advised you to uninstall these extensions.
This isn’t too surprising. Google announced a while ago that it would be removing support for Manifest v2 extensions from Chrome to make way for version 3. However, this new version limits the power of extensions, which means that some apps that use those elevated privileges will stop working properly.
So what are your options if you want to continue using the Manifest V2 extension? The best option is to switch to another browser, but you have to be careful about which browser you switch to. Many browsers today use the Chromium framework, which Google uses to power Chrome. As a result, any browser that uses Chromium may block the V2 extension.
Some browsers won’t block extensions. Brave, for example, is struggling to keep its Manifest V2 extension alive. And Firefox isn’t built on Chromium, so if your extensions work with Chromium, it might be time to switch. With so many reasons to use Firefox instead of Chrome, getting used to the new option may not be as difficult as you think.
