How to automatically turn silent mode on Android
It's embarrassing when your phone rings at the wrong time. Hearing your ringtone ring during an important meeting or ceremony is extremely rude. However, turning it off and missing an important call can also be a big problem.
If you don't trust putting your Android phone on silent when needed and then manually turning the ringer back on, here are ways to automatically turn your phone's silent mode on and off.
1. Automatically turn on and off do not disturb mode
The easiest way to automatically switch to silent mode is with Android's built-in Do Not Disturb mode, which lets you turn off distracting notifications on demand and at scheduled times.
Depending on your device, Do Not Disturb will be in a few different places. On stock Android 11, you'll find the options in Settings > Sound & vibration > Do Not Disturb . Here, you can set up what the mode does and what notifications you can receive when it's on.
Use People to choose which calls and messages can come through while in Do Not Disturb mode. Allowed apps can still send you notifications. There will also be toggles for alarms and other types of interruptions that you can choose to best suit you.
Steps to set up do not disturb mode
Once you've set up Do Not Disturb to your liking, you can schedule it to turn on automatically. You can choose certain times of the day/week or during events on your Google Calendar.
To choose a separate schedule, click the gear icon, then select Do Not Disturb behavior .
Set time for do not disturb mode
This allows calls from trusted contacts while you're sleeping, but silences all alerts while you're in a meeting. Take some time to set up a schedule based on the times you typically need to silence your phone, and it's really useful.
2. Control phone audio with IFTTT
IFTTT is another way to set up scheduled silent mode. It's a popular tool that lets you link all sorts of services together, including functions on your Android device.
To get started, install the IFTTT app on your phone. If you don’t have an account, create one using any of the available options. Once you’re signed in, you can start creating applets, which are IFTTT’s workflows for connecting services.
Create an Android silent mode applet with IFTTT
Open IFTTT on your phone and tap Create to start a new applet. You start with a trigger (If this) that will guide you through the process. You can choose from any of IFTTT's supported services here, such as location, date and time, or Android battery.
For example, you need to silence your phone when you arrive at work. Search for and select a location. Like most IFTTT services, it offers a number of triggers. Select You enter an area , since you want to silence your phone when you enter the office. Next, search for your office address by checking the checkbox in the top right when you find the correct address, then select Continue .
Start setting up silent mode
Now your trigger is complete, so you'll need to select an action (Then That) . Search for Android devices, which have a number of actions available under them. Select Mute ringtone ; on the next screen, you can choose whether to set the device to vibrate.
When finished, you'll see an overview of your applet. Select Continue again to move on to the final review screen. Change the applet title to something more obvious. Toggle the Receive notifications when this runs slider if you want to make sure it's working properly. However, this isn't necessary and can be a bit annoying.
Once you click Finish , you've created the applet. Depending on the version of Android you're using, you may need to allow location access at all times to at least allow it to control do not disturb settings.
If you used the location method above, you’ll need to repeat the steps to create a second app that can turn on your Android ringer when you leave your work area. Otherwise, your phone will stay silent until you manually turn it back on.
For the second applet, follow these steps:
Select You exit the area to enable the location, making sure to select the correct location as before.
While in Android Device , select Set ringtone volume and adjust the desired volume level.
Now your phone will go to silent mode when you arrive at work and turn back to ringtone when you leave.
3. Enhanced silent mode with automatic application
The above two options should work for most people who want to automatically turn their Android phone ringer on and off. However, if you are an advanced user, you can try using Android apps that offer more functionality.
Tasker is a long-time favorite Android app that lets you do pretty much anything on Android without rooting. You can create scripts that chain all sorts of actions to your Android device, including silent mode, of course. Tasker isn’t easy for beginners to use, but if you take the time to learn it, you can do a lot with Tasker.
If you find Tasker too confusing, MacroDroid is an alternative. It’s just as powerful, but has a slightly more approachable interface. You can set it to go into silent mode when a certain app opens, or anything else you want.
