One of the advantages of smart speaker systems that support the Google Assistant virtual assistant is that they can provide a variety of information and data that are personalized to each specific user when requested. However, the smart feature can sometimes cause inconvenience to personal privacy. That is when “Guest Mode” comes into play.
In this article, we will learn about the concept and how to activate Guest Mode on speakers and smart displays that support Google Assistant.
What is Google Assistant Guest Mode?
The idea behind the “Guest Mode” feature is to turn devices like Nest Hub, Nest Mini, Google Home or smart speakers with Google Assistant support from a personal technology product into a public device that anyone can use, while still ensuring privacy and personal data security for the original user.
In other words, when the device is in Guest Mode, access to any personal data will be disabled. The guest user will not be able to access your contacts, messages, photos, or anything related to your personal Google account. At the same time, queries to the original user’s account will not be saved. In simple terms, Guest Mode is somewhat similar to “Incognito Mode” on web browser platforms.
When you set up a device like a smart speaker with Google Assistant built in, the virtual assistant can collect information relevant to you, such as from Google Calendar, shopping lists, Gmail and other linked accounts… to bring you the best query results.
However, this also means that other people can access your personal information when they use the speaker. This is why you need Guest Mode.

How to enable Guest Mode for Google Assistant
Guest Mode is currently only available on Google Assistant-enabled smart speakers and smart displays. It's not compatible with Google Assistant on Android phones and tablets, or iPhones or iPads.
To activate Guest Mode, simply say “ Hey Google, turn on guest mode ”. Wait a few seconds for the virtual assistant to receive and process the command. Then, you will hear a chime and Guest Mode will be applied immediately.
How to turn off Guest Mode
As usual, turning off Guest Mode works essentially the same way as turning it on.
Just say the command “ Hey Google, turn off guest mode ”. You will hear a chime and Guest Mode will be deactivated.
It’s worth noting that while Guest Mode has a lot in common with “Incognito Mode” in a web browser, it’s not as robust. The speaker is still connected to your Google account, as are any other integrations you’ve set up, including music apps and smart home devices. Plus, anyone can use a voice command to turn off Guest Mode.
