Video footage shows a Komodo dragon crushing a dead turtle's shell and swallowing the animal in seconds.
The first part of the video shows a Komodo dragon sniffing out a dead sea turtle lying on the sand. It silently approaches and grabs the turtle's shell.
Because the Komodo dragon's mouth is much smaller than the turtle's shell, it has to manage to get it into its mouth. Then, the Komodo dragon crushes the turtle's shell and easily swallows its prey.
The Komodo dragon is a species of monitor lizard (Varanidae), found only on the islands of Komodo, Rinca, Flores and Gili Motang in Indonesia. This reptile is famous for its killer instinct and ability to swallow large prey.
The Komodo dragon is the largest living lizard on Earth, with a body length that can reach up to 3m, and a weight of about 70kg.

Komodo dragons are voracious eaters, they can eat everything, both raw meat and carrion, even fur, bones, nails... Therefore, to consume hard things like bones, the stomach of this lizard contains digestive juices similar to snakes.
In one meal, it can eat up to 80% of its body weight. After feasting, Komodo dragons often have to drag themselves to a sunny place to help the digestion process take place faster. The reason is that if the food in the dragon's stomach is left for too long, it can rot and cause poisoning.
