Queensland Swimming Subsidy: Who Gets the A$150 Learn to Swim Voucher?

Queensland families can now apply for up to A$150 toward swimming lessons for eligible children aged 0–4 through the Play On! Learn to Swim voucher program. Applications opened on October 27, 2026. This is a targeted subsidy—not a universal payment—and the voucher can only be used with a registered program provider.

The latest round was announced by Queensland Sport and Racing Minister Tim Mander. For parents weighing up lesson costs, the key questions are whether their child qualifies, whether their chosen swim school participates, and how long they have to use the voucher. The Queensland Government's October 27 announcement confirms the opening and the A$150 maximum.

Who qualifies for Queensland's swimming subsidy?

The standard application route is for a parent, carer, or guardian of a child who meets the program's conditions when the application is submitted:

  • Age: The child is 0 to 4 years old, inclusive. A four-year-old may qualify; a five-year-old does not qualify for this particular learn-to-swim voucher.
  • Residence: The child lives in Queensland, and the applying parent, carer, or guardian meets the residency requirements.
  • Medicare: The child is listed on the parent, carer, or guardian's valid Medicare card.
  • Concession eligibility: The family holds a qualifying, valid Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card, subject to the program's cardholder and child-name requirements.
  • Voucher limit: Only one voucher per eligible child is available in a financial year, subject to the current round's conditions and available allocation.

The government's application terms and conditions identify the accepted card categories, including specified Services Australia and Department of Veterans' Affairs cards. Check the exact card rules rather than assuming every concession card qualifies.

What if you do not have a Health Care or Concession Card?

There is a referral pathway for children who need genuine financial assistance. A registered Play On! Learn to Swim referral agent can assess a child's circumstances and, where appropriate, refer the family or complete the voucher application. Referral agents may work in community services, health, child safety, or early childhood settings. Families cannot simply nominate themselves as an approved referral agent, and referrals are not guaranteed.

See the government's referral-agent guidance for who can make a referral. If you are unsure how to access this route, contact the program team before paying for lessons.

How much will the voucher cover?

Each approved voucher is worth up to A$150 and can go toward eligible swimming-lesson membership, registration, or participation fees charged by a registered Play On! Learn to Swim provider. It is not cash and cannot be exchanged for a refund.

For example, if eligible lessons cost A$220, a full A$150 voucher would leave the family to pay A$70. If eligible fees total A$120, the voucher can cover that amount, but the unused A$30 cannot be paid to the family, transferred to another child, or saved for a different activity. The voucher is normally redeemed only once.

It cannot pay for swimsuits, goggles, swimming equipment, travel, or other extras. Ask the swim school for a breakdown of what counts as eligible lesson fees and what you will owe. The official application and use guide sets out these restrictions.

How do families apply and use a voucher?

  1. Check eligibility first. Read the conditions on the official Play On! Learn to Swim program page. Have the relevant Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card details ready if using the regular application route.
  2. Find an approved swim school. Search the registered activity-provider directory. A familiar local pool is not automatically eligible just because it offers lessons. Confirm that the specific provider accepts the Learn to Swim voucher.
  3. Create or sign in to an Enquire account. The online application uses Queensland's Enquire system. Existing account holders can sign in instead of registering again.
  4. Submit the child's application. Choose the Play On! Learn to Swim voucher program, confirm the child's address, accept the privacy statement, enter the required concession-card information, and follow the on-screen prompts. Referral-based applications follow the referral process.
  5. Download the approved voucher. Once approved, find it under the vouchers heading in Enquire. You can download, print, or email it to the approved swim school.
  6. Present it before it expires. Register your child for an eligible lesson program and give the voucher to the provider before the deadline shown on it. Pay any fee above the voucher value directly to the provider.

Applications and voucher issue depend on program availability. The government does not promise that every eligible application will receive funding, so check the program page before making nonrefundable bookings.

What are the important dates?

The current published timetable is for the 2026–27 program round. Queensland uses Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST, UTC+10:00) year-round; Brisbane does not observe daylight saving time.

MilestonePublished deadline
Applications openedOctober 27, 2026
Application closing dateJune 11, 2027, unless vouchers are fully allocated earlier; no closing hour specified in the guidance
Last day to present a voucher to a registered providerJune 18, 2027, at 5:00 p.m. Brisbane AEST (UTC+10:00), equivalent to 7:00 a.m. UTC
Last day for providers to redeem vouchersJune 25, 2027, at 5:00 p.m. Brisbane AEST (UTC+10:00), equivalent to 7:00 a.m. UTC

The two June deadlines are different: families must present the voucher by June 18, while June 25 is the provider's redemption deadline. Do not wait until the provider's deadline to hand in your voucher. The dates appear on the Queensland Government program overview and may be updated if allocation runs out.

Is this the old SwimStart program or the Play On! Sports Voucher?

The newly opened Play On! Learn to Swim scheme is the current program for eligible children aged 0–4, following the earlier SwimStart vouchers. Older SwimStart articles may show application windows and redemption dates from 2025–26; do not use those older dates for the round opened in October 2026.

It is also separate from Play On! Sports Vouchers, a different Queensland program offering up to A$200 for eligible children aged 5–17 to participate in organized sports. The age limits, provider registrations, and eligible activities are not interchangeable. Check the official Sports Voucher information if your child is five or older.

What if a provider is not listed or you need help?

If your preferred swimming school is missing from the Learn to Swim directory, ask whether it plans to register. The voucher cannot be redeemed there unless it becomes an approved provider for this specific program. Ask about session availability, age-appropriate classes, qualification requirements, and extra charges before you enroll.

For eligibility, referral, application, or account questions, contact the Queensland program team at playonswimvouchers@sport.qld.gov.au or call 13 QGOV (13 74 68), Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. Brisbane AEST (UTC+10:00), excluding public holidays. This contact information is listed on the official application page.

Bottom line: Check the child's age and concession or referral eligibility, locate an approved swimming provider, apply through Enquire, and present the voucher before the family deadline. The A$150 subsidy can meaningfully reduce eligible lesson fees, but it does not cover equipment or guarantee a place in a class.
