Samsung reveals patent for foldable display for handheld gaming device
Samsung is considered a pioneer in popularizing foldable screen technology on smartphones with two smartphone lines Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip. Samsung's pioneering work has inspired many other smartphone manufacturers to follow suit, releasing unique foldable screen phone versions to the market.
After initial success with foldable display technology on smartphones, Samsung seems to want to do the same in the handheld gaming market. Recently, a Samsung patent was published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), revealing the Korean manufacturer's idea of applying foldable panels to another use: handheld gaming devices. The patent sketches depict what the device would look like if it became a reality.
Samsung Display Co., the display division of Samsung Electronics, has reportedly filed a patent for a handheld gaming device that folds in the middle, much like the Galaxy Z Flip, for added portability. The device has dedicated gaming controls on both sides. Dedicated gaming support can be seen through the appearance of a circular joystick or d-pad, along with a few additional buttons at the bottom of the device.
Shoulder buttons can also be easily spotted on the side frame, but it's unclear whether they're actual shoulder buttons or something else. Samsung could be using Flex Hinge for this foldable handheld gaming device, and the panel could use Samsung's Ultra Thin Glass technology, similar to what's found on smartphones.
This patent has just been filed internationally, but Samsung actually filed it over a year ago. Since Samsung hasn’t announced anything about a foldable gaming handset in a while, it’s likely that it will remain in patent form, at least for the foreseeable future.
In related news, rumors suggest that Samsung is working on a triple-screen foldable device, which could potentially launch next year.
