Today, Samsung officially announced a new PCIe Gen5 NVMe SSD model called 9100 PRO, the successor to the 990 PRO. On this new product line, the Korean technology giant confidently promises "improved performance up to 99%" or almost double the speed compared to its predecessor, which was also highly appreciated.
In terms of performance, the company says the new 9100 PRO can achieve sequential read and write speeds of up to 14,800 MB/s and 13,400 MB/s respectively. In terms of random performance, the published numbers are 2,200K IOPS (input-output per second) and 2,600K IOPS for read/write respectively.
Notably, this is also the first time Samsung has brought an 8TB NVMe SSD to the masses, which is great considering the benefits of having a faster SSD for gaming thanks to modern technologies like DirectStorage, while game file sizes are getting larger.

Samsung also says that the "9100 PRO is designed with an advanced thermal management solution" - an important aspect since PCIe 5.0 SSDs are known to run hot. The new 9100 PRO comes with an 8.8mm thick heatsink for the 1TB to 4TB models and an 11.25mm thick heatsink for the 8TB model. The thicker heatsink on the 8TB model is nearly 27.85% thicker and should of course provide better heat dissipation, ensuring the SSD's performance is maintained when working continuously at high intensity.
Samsung said in a press release announcing the SSD 9100 PRO:
- Advanced architecture with speeds up to 14,800 MB/s and 13,400 MB/s, improving performance up to 99% compared to the predecessor 990 PRO.
- With the help of improved thermal management solutions, the 9100 PRO will have a 49% improvement in power efficiency compared to the 990 PRO.
- The first appearance of an 8TB variant in Samsung's consumer NVMe SSD line brings abundant storage capacity for high-performance gaming, content creation, and professional tasks.
The SSD 9100 PRO has no official pricing yet, but Samsung India’s website currently lists the 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB variants at INR 14,999, INR 25,499, and INR 49,999, respectively. This equates to approximately $149.99, $254.99, and $499.99. The pricing for the 8TB variant has yet to be announced and will likely be revealed closer to the official launch in the second half of this year. Meanwhile, the remaining variants will be available and available for sale from March 18, 2025.
