Task Manager is about to add the ability to display the type of SSD your computer is using on Windows 11
Windows 11 is getting a small and neat update to Task Manager. In upcoming updates to Windows 11, Task Manager will offer a feature that makes it easier for users to determine the type of storage their computer is using.
Task Manager already displays "HDD" and "SSD" labels to differentiate between hard drive types, but now Microsoft wants to provide more granular information. For example, users can see if the SSD currently on their system is SATA, NVMe, or some other type.
The change was spotted in the latest Windows 11 preview build from the Beta Channel. Microsoft hasn't mentioned it in the release notes, so users will have to figure it out for themselves.
If your computer is running Windows 11 build 22635.4225, you can fire up the updated Task Manager using the ViVeTool app. Then, navigate to the Performance tab of Task Manager and look for the SSD type details in parentheses.
2. Launch Command Prompt as Administrator. To do so, press Win + R , type cmd and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter .
3. Navigate to the folder containing the ViveTool files using the CD command . For example, if you placed ViveTool in C:\Vive, type CD C:\Vive .
4. Type vivetool /enable /id:51978387 and press Enter .
5. Restart your computer and run Task Manager.
Note that you don’t have to go all the way through Task Manager to check what type of SSD you have. You can find that out by going to Settings > System > Storage > Advanced Storage Settings > Disk & Volumes and clicking Properties next to your hard drive. In that section, Windows will display more detailed information about the hard drive, including its type, health, temperature, capacity, partition type, and more.
