Game of the Year 2024
Game of the Year goes to Astro Bot, a game developed by Team Asobi and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment exclusively for PlayStation 5.
It is the sequel to the 2020 game Astro's Playroom and the first Astro game developed by Team Asobi after the team split from Japan Studio. The game was released to celebrate the 30th anniversary of PlayStation and received critical acclaim. As of November 2024, the game has sold 1.5 million copies and won multiple awards at The Game Awards 2024, including Game of the Year.
Astro Bot is a 3D platformer where players control the main character, a small robot named Astro Bot, via the PS5's DualSense controller. Astro's skill set remains largely the same as in previous installments, including the ability to jump, hover, punch, and spin attacks. In addition, the ability to swim underwater from Astro Bot Rescue Mission also returns, after being removed in Astro's Playroom.
The game will have 90 levels, divided into 6 galaxies and 60 planets. Each level has three difficulty levels: Easy, Normal and Hard. The main story levels are usually at Easy and Normal levels, while the challenge levels are at Hard level. Before starting each level, the difficulty level will be displayed for you to choose according to your ability.
Additionally, new levels will be added as free DLC later in 2024. You'll travel between galaxies and levels via the "Dual Speeder," a ship designed to look exactly like the DualSense controller. The Dual Speeder can be controlled by holding down the trigger buttons and tilting the DualSense, and can even move freely on the level select screen.
