The Snapdragon 8 Elites Adreno 830 GPU is powerful enough to run AAA games
Not only did Qualcomm significantly improve the Snapdragon 8 Elite's computing performance by adding custom Oryon cores, but on the graphics side, the Adreno 830 GPU's clock speed was also increased to 1.10 GHz, ensuring that this SoC can handle many AAA games to a certain extent.
The first glimpses of the Adreno 830 GPU’s graphics performance have been revealed by comparing the Snapdragon 8 Elite to the Radeon 780M in the 3DMark Steel Nomad Light benchmark. The results show that the integrated graphics processor on Qualcomm’s flagship mobile chipset actually outperforms the GPU found in a handheld gaming device (the ASUS ROG Ally).
Accordingly, the 3DMark Steel Nomad Light test results posted by technology blogger @4k_isn on X show that ROG Ally's Radeon 780M scored 2,547 points in the benchmark test, while the Adreno 830 was slightly faster with a score of 2,681. However, YouTuber Dame Tech, who regularly posts gaming performance videos of various Apple products, showed that the Radeon 780M outperformed the Snapdragon 8 Elite with a score of 2,859.
Dame Tech also points out that the ROG Ally is able to maintain this score thanks to its powerful cooling solution, which is something that even today's top smartphones can't match. On the other hand, the Snapdragon 8 Elite has significantly lower power consumption than the Radeon 780M, making it more efficient.
Regardless of whether Qualcomm's latest and greatest processor can beat the Radeon 780M, these scores show that the Adreno 830 is fully capable of handling AAA games. Qualcomm says the Adreno 830 GPU is a huge improvement, with 40% more raw performance and 35% more ray tracing than the previous generation. The GPU has three slices, each running at 1.10GHz, and supports modern graphics APIs.
The only problem here is that game developers will have to invest a lot in porting their games to this platform, or more specifically, compatibility with the Snapdragon 8 Elite. The prospects are huge because even last year's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 was capable of running AAA titles, such as Black Myth: Wukong, via emulator.
