Spotify Wrapped may be the most anticipated statistic of the year, but Google has been releasing its annual search data for more than two decades. To see what the world is curious about this year, check out Google’s Year in Search, which just launched on December 11, 2024.
Google Reveals Top Searches for 2024
Google seems to be a big believer in the concept of “sharing is caring.” In November, Google Shopping released a list of trending gifts, leveraging Google’s US search analysis ahead of the peak holiday shopping season. Now, Google is giving us a more comprehensive list of top trending searches—and this time, it’s global.

So what do people care about in 2024?
This list, published by Google Trends, breaks down top searches by categories like Trending, Entertainment , and Google Maps . It even includes top songs found through Google's Hum to Search feature.
Tip : You can further refine your results by country.
In fact, what the world cares about most in 2024 is sports. Globally, four of the top five trending searches are related to sports tournaments and matches, with “Copa América” taking the number one spot. The final and only non-sports search in the top five is “Liam Payne,” the famous singer of One Direction who tragically passed away this past October.

Narrowing the results down to the United States, however, the top five trending searches are a different story. Sports is replaced by politics, with three of the top five spots related to the 2024 US presidential election. The remaining two spots are occupied by the New York Yankees and Connections. Kudos to The New York Times for creating a fun game that can compete with Wordle.

One of the most interesting discoveries was that the second most popular song found using Hum to Search was “Bling Bang Bang Born” by Japanese hip-hop duo Creepy Nuts. The song went viral on the social media app TikTok in 2024, so it makes sense that the tune would be a popular search on the internet.
While the world has certainly faced some big challenges this year, it’s refreshing to see that many Google searches have been relatively light. Maybe people are taking a break from social media to indulge their curiosity with Google. Either way, it’s easy to spend hours digging into Google’s latest data. Feel free to summon your inner Sherlock Holmes – even if BBC Sherlock isn’t one of the top searches this year.
