What does the E symbol on the phone mean?
What does the E symbol on the phone mean?
You may have noticed that whenever your phone is having connection issues, the signal bar shows an “E” instead of 5G or LTE. But what exactly does the “E” mean, and why does it make your internet connection so slow?
What does "E" mean on the phone?
The “E” on the phone stands for EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution) network technology with limited internet speeds – slower than 3G but faster than 2G. That’s why it’s often referred to as 2.75G. It uses 8PSK (Phase Shift Keying) modulation to send data faster than standard GSM technology.
EDGE was introduced in 2003 when Cingular, now known as AT&T, deployed it on its GSM (Global System for Mobile) network. At the time, GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) was the standard for transmitting data over GSM networks, but it had limitations. It could handle a maximum Internet speed of 172 Kbps, which was not enough to meet the growing demand for Internet.
Why is the "E" network so slow?
When your phone is in “E” mode, you can still send text messages and make calls, but your Internet speed will be reduced. This is because EDGE technology has a theoretical maximum speed of 384 Kbps, which is much slower than today's average Internet speed. Also, keep in mind that EDGE's maximum speed was tested under ideal laboratory conditions. Real-world speeds are often much slower.

Most countries around the world now have at least minimal 4G coverage, and many are well into 5G deployment. EDGE remains as a fallback, but the situation varies by country and carrier. Some countries are also phasing out 3G, which can lead to unexpected issues with connected devices that can’t use the modern network.
Why does my phone show "E" instead of 4G/5G?
Here are some possible reasons why your phone might show "E" network:
Weak Signal : With poor network coverage, your phone may have difficulty maintaining a stable connection. In this case, it may temporarily switch to EDGE until the device is in a better coverage area.
Network congestion : In high traffic areas, such as concert venues or sporting events, network congestion can occur. To deal with this, the phone may switch to EDGE to ensure users can still make calls and send messages.
As mentioned above, you can still send text messages and make regular calls, but Internet access is extremely limited.
Tips to fix phone stuck on network "E"
If your phone is stuck on the "E" network, here are some tips to get faster Internet access:
1. Turn Airplane Mode On and Off
Turn on Airplane mode for a few seconds, then turn it off. This simple trick sometimes forces your phone to reconnect to a stronger network signal.
2. Select network manually
If you know for sure that there is a stronger network in your area, you can manually select it from your phone's network settings. This will override the automatic network selection and connect you to the faster connection.
Android
In the settings menu, navigate to Connections > Mobile networks > Network operators .
Turn off Select automatically and select the network from the list.
iOS
Go to Settings > Cellular > Network Options .
Turn off Auto and select your network.
3. Reset network settings
If you recently changed your network settings, it's possible that something went wrong while doing so. In that case, reset your network settings to their defaults. This will delete saved Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth devices, and other preferences.
On your Android device, navigate to Settings > General Management > Reset > Reset network settings .
To reset network settings on iOS, tap Settings > General > Switch or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings .
4. Try Wi-Fi instead of mobile data
As mentioned above, this issue usually occurs when the cellular signal is weak. Find a nearby Wi-Fi network and connect to it. This is a temporary solution while you figure out the root cause of the network problem.
These are quick fixes when your phone is stuck in “E” mode. However, if none of these solutions work, contact your carrier for further assistance.
