What is a fish?
The crocodile is the ancient name for the crocodile, a large aquatic reptile. Sometimes revered, often feared, crocodiles deserve our respect. They are certainly great survivors. As one of the earliest predators, crocodiles are known to have evolved at the same time as dinosaurs. That is, more than 200 million years ago. Crocodiles are not dinosaurs, but reptiles. They are members of the order Crocodylia, making them closely related to, but distinct from, the American alligator. There are 23 species of crocodiles, ranging in size from under 2 meters to over 6 meters.
Crocodiles are perfectly adapted to their habitat. They can be found in both salt and fresh water in tropical climates throughout Asia, Africa, Australia and the Americas.
Crocodiles can move quickly, swimming at speeds of up to 20 miles per hour. They are not as fast on land, running at speeds of only 10 miles per hour. Despite what is said, most humans can outrun crocodiles, especially since they are not really adapted to running long distances and will start to tire after 20 to 30 meters.
Crocodiles are large in size and have powerful jaws, so they are considered one of the most fearsome carnivores on Earth.
