Barbie changes shape! No longer just thin, with a narrow waist and long legs but also curvy, low or very high .
Barbara Millicent Roberts, this is the real name of Barbie, born on March 9, 1959 in Wisconsin, from January 28, 2016 has different shapes , just as different is the body of women in the real world.
BARBIE'S BODY CHANGES
It is an epochal change if we think that Barbie has always been the icon of female beauty , the woman with perfect shapes , with a body with ideal sizes 90 - 60 - 90.
It is not just a question of beauty but of proportions that are considered the reference for women all over the world and unfortunately also for girls who until now have seen in Barbie a model to aspire to once they become adults.
MATTEL'S DECISION
Times have changed, this is the truth and Mattel has decided to evolve the Barbie following these changes.
Is the fashion for women with the waistline over ? Maybe not, given the models still parading on the catwalks or the angels of Victoria's Secret. Certainly, however, the concept of female beauty has evolved , thanks to the refusal of the excessive thinness of supermodels, the awareness of the importance of health and the distances taken from what should not be considered beautiful but 'sick'. Skeletal bodies or obese bodies are both expressions of a health problem and cannot and should not be considered models to be imitated.
At Mattel they have been working for a long time on this project which has remained virtually secret until today. It's called the Alba project and it represents a new era for the brand. The employees themselves did not know until the end what it was. The company carried out tests involving girls of different ages to evaluate the reactions that were very positive especially for the older girls, while the younger ones paid little attention to changing the silhouette.
Why did Mattel decide to make this innovation? For 57 years Barbie has been the fashion doll par excellence , able to follow and interpret any fashion, to carry out any profession, up to representing different ethnic groups : we have seen the Barbie of color, the oriental one, even the Eskimo or the Peruvian barbie.
Anyone who had the opportunity to see the Barbie exhibition in Milan at Meduc (it will be open until March 13, 2016) was able to discover the story of the famous doll, all its changes and transformations. It is not a simple toy for girls but a global icon, interpreter of the taste and transformations of society, capable of breaking down any linguistic, cultural and anthropological barrier.
For this reason, once again Barbie must be able to represent the female world in its entirety by addressing the fact that the concept of beauty has changed and diversity is much more important than perfection . It is also an ethical question.
"We believe we have a responsibility to girls and their parents to reflect a broader vision of beauty," said Evelyn Mazzocco , vice president and general manager of Barbie, who has worked at Mattel for 20 years. Kimberly Culmone , vice president of Barbie design, explained that “Differences are no longer a problem. This is the real world, we are all beautiful even if with wide and slightly curvy hips ”.
Now there will be a litmus test. How will the sales go? Will they like the new shape of Barbie? What controversies will come out? We just have to wait and see the reactions of both children and adults.
THE NEW BARBIE
How are the new Barbies? They have 4 body types , 7 different complexions , 24 hair types (colors and hairstyles) and 22 different eye colors , to offer girls the opportunity to choose their ideal doll, the one that best represents them.
Space therefore to the curvy Barbie, because the curves are beautiful and a curvy body is also sexy. But not only that, the Barbie can also be small in stature or very tall. The face is not only thin and hollow but also chubby. The shape of the eyes changes and the hair can be of all colors!
The new line is called Barbie Fashionistas Dolls . Let's see all the new Barbies!
Barbie launched the hashtag #TheDollEvolves because the Doll we all loved and still adore evolves and looks to the future by accepting and valuing diversity .
And you, what do you think of this change? Do you like the new Barbie 2016 “bodies”?
