Check Epic Games’ official status page before changing your Fortnite settings. An outage or scheduled maintenance can prevent login and matchmaking even when your internet connection works. If Epic reports normal service, work through the device and network checks below.
November 1, 2026 update: Epic marked Fortnite’s v43.00 maintenance completed at 08:12 UTC. Fortnite’s Login, Game Services and Matchmaking components showed Operational when reviewed. This is a dated snapshot; check the live page for subsequent changes.
For Australian readers, that completion notice corresponds to the following times, all on November 1:
| City | Completion-notice time | Time zone |
|---|---|---|
| Sydney | 7:12 p.m. | Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT), UTC+11 |
| Brisbane | 6:12 p.m. | Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST), UTC+10 |
| Perth | 4:12 p.m. | Australian Western Standard Time (AWST), UTC+8 |
These are conversions of Epic’s posted completion time, not guarantees that every player connected at that instant. Sydney observes daylight saving on this date; Brisbane and Perth do not.
A server is a remote computer that handles online game functions. Fortnite uses multiple services, so reaching the website does not establish that login or matches are working.
Operational means Epic reports that component working normally. Degraded performance means service may be impaired; an outage indicates unavailable functionality. Scheduled maintenance is planned work. If your affected service is down, wait for Epic’s recovery update before making extensive local changes.
Epic’s maintenance guidance also directs players to its FortniteStatus account and Communities forum. A scheduled end time is an estimate; a completion update provides stronger evidence that the maintenance has finished.
Write down your device, the exact error message, the affected game mode and the time with your city or time zone. Note whether you can reach the lobby, whether other online services work, and whether the problem affects one mode or several. Change one setting at a time so you can identify what helped.
Fully close Fortnite, check your launcher or console for a pending Fortnite update, then reopen the game. If needed, restart the device and test again.
Epic’s Matchmaking Error #5 and #7 instructions recommend checking server status first, then restarting Fortnite and investigating the connection. An error number alone does not prove a widespread outage.
On a console, run its built-in internet connection test. Epic’s console network guide links to the relevant Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo instructions and recommends checking your internet service provider for local outages.
Restart your modem or router using the manufacturer’s instructions. A restart means turning equipment off and back on; avoid pressing a factory-reset button. On a shared network, allow for other users losing connectivity during the restart.
Where possible, compare a wired Ethernet connection with Wi-Fi. Pause large downloads, uploads and streams during the test. Epic identifies congestion and wireless signal problems among the factors that can worsen connection quality.
Ping, or latency, is the round-trip delay between your device and a server, measured in milliseconds. Lower values generally mean less network delay.
Following Epic’s matchmaking-region instructions, open Settings, select Game, then find Matchmaking Region under Language and Region. Choose Auto and apply the change. Epic recommends Auto because it selects the region with the best ping.
If you test another region, compare its displayed delay. Changing regions can affect latency; it cannot restore a service undergoing global maintenance.
Packet loss means some of the small units of network data fail to reach their destination. It can disrupt gameplay even when a basic speed test looks acceptable.
Open Settings, select Game UI, and enable Net Debug Stat or Net Debug Stats under the heads-up display settings. Epic’s packet-loss guide says you must enter a match to see real results. Record the readings when the problem occurs, rather than relying on the lobby.
File verification checks for damaged or missing installation files. It is useful when Fortnite will not launch correctly or reports file problems; it does not repair Epic’s servers.
In the legacy Epic Games Launcher, open Library, find Fortnite, select its three-dot menu, then Manage and Verify. In Launcher Preview, select Fortnite in Library and use the three-dot menu beside Play, then Manage and Verify. Wait for completion. Epic’s verification instructions distinguish these launcher versions and state that saved data is unaffected.
If multiple services fail or packet loss continues, contact your internet service provider. If Fortnite alone keeps failing after these checks, use Epic Support and include your error message, device, mode, timestamps and network readings. Epic’s latency troubleshooting guide explains what connection evidence helps an investigation.
A permission-related tournament error needs a different response: Epic’s matchmaking-error guidance distinguishes eligibility problems from server and network failures. Read the complete message before reinstalling the game or changing router settings.
