Spotify offers various social interaction features like sharing music with friends, combining music preferences into one playlist using Blend, playing music together using remote sessions, and much more. These features are good, but not everyone wants their friends to see what they're listening to on Spotify.
You have two ways to hide music listening activity on Spotify. You can turn off Spotify Listening Activity sharing or turn on Spotify's private listening mode. Here's how to hide listening activity on Spotify for mobile and desktop .

What is Listening Activity on Spotify?
Music listening activity is part of the social feature - Friend Activity on Spotify. It allows users to see what songs their friends are listening to and vice versa. Essentially, this feature helps you discover songs you might have overlooked because Spotify's algorithm didn't think you'd like them.
Listening Activity is different from Private Session. It's easy to see the big difference between turning off listening and playing in private mode on Spotify.
Spotify says running a private mode hides your listening activity from your friends and some algorithmic suggestions. That means Spotify won't be able to use the songs you play in private mode to recommend music. It's like a browser's incognito mode.
On the other hand, when Listening Activity is turned off, Spotify will only hide the music you listen to from your friends. However, it will pick that music and use it to suggest songs in Made For You.
How to turn off Spotify's Listening Activity on desktop
- Open the Spotify app .
- Click the drop-down arrow in the top right corner of the application.
- Select Settings from the pop-up menu.
- In the Settings page , scroll down to Social .
- Turn off Share my listening activity on Spotify .
Additionally, if you want to keep your Spotify account more private, turn off Show my recently played artists on my public profile and Publish my new playlists on my profile . Remember, the second option allows you to hide new playlists on your account, it does not enable private playlists by default.
How to turn off Spotify's Listening Activity on mobile
On Android and iOS, follow these steps to turn off listening:
- Open the Spotify app .
- Tap the Settings icon on the top right.
- On iOS, tap Social , then turn off Listening Activity on the next page.
- On Android , scroll down to Social and turn off Listening Activity .
If you are playing music on another device and access the Social settings option on the mobile device, it will appear as unavailable. In that case, you must change the mobile device as the primary source to unlock Social settings and some other features.
To set your mobile device as the primary source, tap the player at the bottom and select the Device options menu on the top right (iOS) or bottom left (Android). In the pop-up menu, tap your current mobile device in Select a device . After doing this, you can now access Social features on that device.
