If you have an Android tablet or smartphone and want to use a wired Ethernet connection, it's completely possible to do so easily.
While the option below still works for many Android devices, there's a better new way to connect to Ethernet. Using a Type-C hub can add a variety of ports including HDMI , VGA , Ethernet , older USB standards, and an SD port. Type-C hubs also have much better compatibility.
Note: Only phones that support OTG can use this method.
Requirements for connecting Android to Ethernet
You must be running Android Marshmallow 6.0.1 or later.
To see what version your device is running, go to Settings > About Device .
Previous Android versions required rooting, but this is no longer required from Marshmallow 6.0.1.
Next, an OTG to Ethernet adapter will be needed.
OTG stands for On-The-Go and simply plugs into your Android's micro USB port. It is primarily used for copying files to external storage like flash drives but can also be used for LAN internet connections.
Ethernet adapters will transmit signals over the network. These can be purchased separately or as a combo that includes several different adapter cables.
Not all adapters are compatible with all Android devices and it is necessary to verify that it works with your device.
While it's unlikely to be a problem, the processor in the adapter and the phone/tablet must be compatible. Just make sure an adapter will work with your Android device before using it.
See what type of port your device uses, the old Micro-USB or the new Type-C.
Most older Android smartphones use a Micro-USB port with the new Type-C port now found on the Galaxy S10, S20, and similar high-end devices.
Most Android devices just need to be plugged in and will connect automatically. Turn off Wifi to leave the phone connected to Ethernet alone.
Some devices require setting the device to airplane mode, this depends on the ROM of each phone manufacturer.
Connecting an Android smartphone or tablet to an Ethernet line is easy with Android Marshmallow and above.
While most won't have any issues, your phone or tablet must have drivers for the microprocessor in the Ethernet adapter to work.
Each manufacturer customizes the Android operating system for their devices and may remove or add pre-installed drivers.
Just remember to read the adapter's specifications and reviews to make sure it works with your device.
