Smartphone manufacturers are rushing to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into their devices, hoping that it will be the next competitive advantage. AI is certainly useful in many ways, but focusing on it can lead to major problems and stifle other innovations that could have a much bigger impact.
1. Companies are ignoring hardware innovation
Regardless of platform, iOS or Android, smartphone users agree that innovation in this area has slowed down. While we wouldn’t entirely blame AI features for this, it certainly doesn’t make things any better.
Why? Because companies have limited R&D budgets, so every dollar spent on developing an AI model is a dollar not spent on coming up with new hardware innovations that could prove to be much more groundbreaking.
Foldable phones, for example, are still far from perfect and will take years to refine, but the companies making them may not be able to afford it if they’ve already spent a large chunk of their R&D budgets training large in-house language models.
2. Prioritizing AI leaves key problems unsolved
While no one can deny the convenience they can provide, prioritizing adding new AI features to devices that already have a lot of problems to fix may not be the best idea. But that’s exactly what some smartphone companies seem to be doing.
For example, Samsung's Galaxy AI features are really new and exciting, but most users want the company to prioritize fixing shutter lag when taking high-resolution photos and reducing the amount of bloatware on Galaxy devices.
Likewise, many Pixel users want Google to improve charging speeds, video quality, and battery life, fix jerky lens switching in the camera app, and offer 256GB as the default on its flagship phones instead of flooding them with even more AI smarts.
The problem here is that for most people, smartphones are first a tool and then a way of life. So solving the problems they face makes more sense than just adding new features that, while nice, aren't really necessary.
3. AI features complicate the user interface for non-tech-savvy users
If you add too much to your UI, it starts to look cluttered and confusing. You can navigate through all the new icons, labels, and UI elements, but most people simply aren’t tech-savvy enough to keep up with all the changes.
AI features can also take some getting used to, and results aren’t always immediately apparent. Understanding and processing user input takes time, especially on low-end phones. This can discourage people from using the feature after trying it out for a few days.
4. Companies are prioritizing novelty over providing value
Since we're not really at the threshold of hardware breakthroughs in smartphone technology, companies are using AI as a means to differentiate their phones and provide novelty.
So what’s the problem? It’s one thing to offer existing features at a lower price, and it’s another to offer new features at a higher price. And it seems like the tech giants are leaning toward the latter approach, which is bad news for value-conscious buyers who just want an affordable phone that covers all the basics.
But as companies start integrating AI into everything, you have no choice but to pay for those new features even though you may not really need them. It would be better if companies focused on providing value rather than novelty.
Of course, people shouldn’t be deterred from integrating AI into smartphones. But companies shouldn’t be so obsessed with AI that they ignore other important aspects of smartphones. AI features shouldn’t be an excuse for a company to not fix existing problems or forget about other avenues of innovation.
