In 2023, a series of AIs that create images with just a short description were released, including OpenAI's Dall-E , Stability.AI's Stable Diffusion, and Meta's Midjourney, Imagine with Meta AI .

In February, the winning photo of two people surfing in a photography competition run by Australian electronics company DigiDirect was described as “taken by drone.” The author later admitted that the photo was created using Absolutely AI.

In March, a photo of The Electrician, complete with all the typical AI flaws (like the weird finger), was awarded the Creativity Award at the Sony World Photography Awards (SWPA 2023) competition, causing a stir in the photography community. The Electrician was later removed from the list of awards.
Fake Donald Trump photo arrested
In March, a series of photos of former US President Donald Trump being arrested and imprisoned went viral on the Internet, leading many to believe they were real. In fact, this was a work created by Elliot Higgins using Midjourney.
Fake photo of "Pentagon Explosion"
On May 22, a photo appeared on Facebook showing a large column of smoke rising to the left of the Pentagon with the caption: "Large explosion near the Pentagon complex in Washington DC."
The photo quickly went viral on Twitter and was shared thousands of times, even appearing on several major news sites. According to CNN and NBC News, the US stock market was affected for a short time after the image caused a stir online.
Real photos mistaken for AI-generated
In mid-July, a photo taken by Suzi Dougherty on an iPhone was disqualified from the Charing Cross Photo competition because it was suspected to have been generated by AI.
