In the latest Power On newsletter, veteran Bloomberg writer Mark Gurman, who is known for his highly accurate revelations regarding Apple products, suggested that Apple may be considering a TV production project.
In fact, this idea is nothing new for Apple, as similar rumors have been circulating online since around 2009 to 2011. Now, it seems that the company may once again be inclined to release a TV bearing the Apple logo.
While Gurman didn’t share any specifics about the future Apple TV, he did mention that it could be one of several smart home products the company will launch if its rumored smart home ecosystem proves successful. That means a commercial product is still a long way off and unlikely to launch for at least a few years.
Gurman notes that “if Apple doesn’t invest in smart displays, it may have to rethink its smart home ambitions.” This suggests that whether or not the Apple TV becomes a reality depends on the success of the company’s other smart home ecosystem products.
Additionally, it appears that Apple is only in the early stages of considering making TVs. However, while this is just a rumor, it does raise the possibility that Apple will enter the TV industry directly, which is currently dominated by Chinese companies and some Korean tech giants like Samsung and LG.
Rumors have also fueled speculation about what Apple will include in the TV to differentiate it from its rivals in terms of display, specs, features, and most importantly, price. It’s possible that Apple will only release a high-end TV if it does launch.
Apple COO Tim Cook said at the 2010 Goldman Sachs Conference that his company “has no interest in getting into the TV market.” Of course, Apple’s stance on this may change over time. Let’s wait and see!
