Apple is developing a smart doorbell and lock system that can use Face ID to unlock doors for people on its identification list. If all goes well, the product could be released as early as late 2025.
Specifically, according to a report by Apple journalist Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, the doorbell will offer "advanced facial recognition technology" and wireless integration with smart home locks, which could include existing HomeKit-compatible third-party locks. Or, Apple could partner with a specific manufacturer to offer a complete, all-in-one system, meaning users won't have to buy or install individual devices.
Gurman reports that the system is in the early stages of development and won't be ready for mass production until at least late next year. The device is expected to be equipped with a Secure Enclave chip and handle security-related tasks, specifically Face ID information. Basic connectivity like Wi-Fi/Bluetooth will certainly be fully supported.
The smart doorbell is expected to be a key part of Apple's push into the smart home space, with its Apple Intelligence platform at the center of the action. A complete ecosystem of hardware and software services would put Apple in competition with the likes of Amazon's Ring and Google Nest, and it's just one of several smart home products Apple is working on. The company is also reportedly working on an indoor security camera that would work with its rumored smart home hub, which is expected to launch as early as next year.
