Apple may be preparing to integrate Gemini into Apple Intelligence
Code found in the newly released iOS 18.4 beta suggests that Apple is preparing an alternative to the ChatGPT integration in Apple Intelligence, most likely Google Gemini . From the beginning, Apple has expressed its intention to collaborate with various AI partners, including Google and its Gemini service.
The recent developer beta of iOS 18.4 revealed code referencing Google Gemini, as 9to5mac initially reported. The code appeared in a backend update that came with the beta, mentioning Google instead of Google Gemini, and also referencing OpenAI instead of ChatGPT.
In March 2024, Apple expressed its clear intention to integrate Google Gemini into its services. However, the reason for this integration being delayed for a year remains unclear.
It has been determined that Google Gemini, ChatGPT and other AI services, such as those from Alibaba and Baidu in China, will be integrated into Apple Intelligence in a similar way. The user's request will initially be processed by Siri on the device and, if necessary, forwarded to the selected AI service with the user's consent.
Apple's deal with OpenAI ensures that user requests are processed by ChatGPT without the AI company retaining any of its information. It's expected that any deal with Google would prioritize user privacy.
Additionally, this integration is expected to be a free addition to the features offered by Apple Intelligence. While there has been speculation about potential fees for some of Apple Intelligence’s features, such fees are not expected to be implemented before 2027.
It's important to note that while the presence of this code in the iOS 18.4 beta suggests an upcoming integration, it doesn't serve as definitive confirmation.
